It all comes down to coaching. Good coaches get the most out of lesser talented players.

They beat us by keeping our offense off the field . Our defense is much better now. It won't be that easy this year

They also won because they sacked Boyd at least 4 times and caused two turnovers. The last two years the o lines inability to block their d line has been the reason they've won.

The reason we lost is because we abandoned our running game after halftime.

That's not true. Go back and look at the stats.
Clemson opened the first drive with 3 rushes.
2nd drive of the 3rd quarter saw 2 rushes and 3 pass attempts
3rd drive-2 rushes and 2 passes
4th drive-2 rushes and 1 pass
5th drive-2 rushes and 1 pass
That's more passes than rushes in the second half

Hot Rod was shredding you in the second Q and we stopped running him and Ellington as much in the second half. Watch the film. You'll see what I mean. Hands down the worst play calling I've seen from Chad Morris.

Some of Boyd's runs were designed. Still, it counts as a rush yardage and rushes regardless of the outcome

Tajh got greedy with the runs
Apr 30, 2013, 6:11 PM
|
|
We ran him a lot in the first half along with Ellington and Hot Rod. But it seemed to me Tajh was too impatient on our WRs and just decided to run as son as he got the snap. We didn't use our RBs much in the 2nd half, and when we did we ran lateral runs, not vertical like in the first half. The main weakness I've seen in our RBs is the fact they try to run around the defenders. We need to run THROUGH them. Just look at Eddie Lacy.

That would be attributed to a strong defense breaking it down, which would cause rushes. Some of the QB runs were designed

eh, the reason we lost is we could not get their offense off the field. yes, we had 2 picks. we also dropped 3 right in our hands. 19 play drive by that dreadful coot offense was sickening to watch. how many third and a million did we let them convert. offense gets kinda stale sitting on the sideline for 8 minute chunks. that defense will be muuuuuuuuuuuuuch better this year, i have no doubt.

Not saying you're wrong, but just wondering what you are using to base this assumption off of. Our D looked great against LSU, but don't forget there were exposed a lot all season, and looked pathetic against SCar. I'm pleased with the LSU game, but I'm not one to believe that one game magically cured our defensive woes. They will have more experience after another offseason of coaching, but I will wait to see how they play against Georgia before I call them "much better." Maybe I'm just cynical.

True, so true. The difference for the past four years has been in the coaching, on both sides of the ball. Theirs are simply better than ours, at least when we're playing them.

Them beating us last year was in our inability to get off the field defensively. I think we ran about 60 plays , which is about 40 fewer than we did vs LSU. Our offense became too one dimensional in the second half as we inexplicably abandoned the run...which worked wonders in the first half. We have to be aggressive defensively against Spurrts' offense..the nickel and cover two have never been effective against his scheme. Never. Bobby B used to beat him by bringing the LBs up and forcing it with man coverage. I believe we are about twice as good up front as we have been in a decade or so, this year we will need to prove it.

Might be when Ward made some defensive adjustments to counter the run? Just a thought, like bringing up a hybrid LB/DB closer to the line? But hey, everyone on this board is far smarter than Chad, especially in that game, huh? Also maybe they knew our receivers couldn't deal with press contact off the line, which we've seen against them for 4 straight years. Then there's that great O-line protection against JDC and co.

It all boils down to physicality.
Apr 30, 2013, 11:26 AM
|
|
The coots have physically dominated us the past 4 years. Especially in the trenches.
Until we start playing more physical and getting an effective pass rush on them, it won't change.
I think Venables 2nd year with new additions will prove to possibly bring Tiger D back!!
O-line can learn something from Norton. Nasty tough mentality.
Go Tigers!! Keep working hard! This could be a special year.

Because of coaching...Clemson ran 19 plays in the second half I think. Shoot, after the first quarter Clemson only scored 3 points while SC scored 20. This is all coaching, Clemson had a better gameplan coming in but Spurrier and Co. adjusted offensively and defensively while Clemson could not.

Apr 30, 2013, 3:46 PM

the practice time between the two. All during the season, Venables is getting them ready for the next opponent. Having the extra bowl prep time was a the key to the D's showing up in Atlanta. It should only get better from here out considering who is coming back both this year and next. The DBs are the question mark as everyone knows. If that comes together, it's gonna be fun.

Re: Got blasted last year for pointing it out and will again
May 1, 2013, 10:29 AM

this summer, but SC is a bad matchup and it was proven again even with a backup QB in his 2nd start in November.
Clemson's strengths do not match up with SC weaknesses as a team, while SC strengths attack Clemson's main weaknesses almost perfectly.
SC negates Clemson's primary asset, which is speed at the skill position, by physically re-routing the Clemson targets in their routes which gives the dominant SC DL time to get to the QB. Clemson is not built and isn't going to BAMA anybody for 40 mins with a power running game.
On offense, SCs balanced offense has simply overmatched Clemson average defense for the past 4 years because Clemson has an inability to shut down both components of a balanced offense. If Clemson loads up to stop SC running game like they did in 2010\2012 then SC has burnt them by passing, when Clemson has change to trying to shut down the pass...then SC simply goes back to power running game to get 1st downs and burn the clock.
And this is the point where the blasting comes....for 2013, the situation has only gotten worst...SC main weakness will be at the LB position due to inexperience but Clemson has lost the players who could have taken advantage of that problem....Ellington\Ford. SC will be stronger at CB\DL and on offense SC looks to be even more balanced and return experienced solid QBs who have both had stellar days vs Clemson.
SC is a bad matchup.

Clemson has a soft defense. The LBs stink. You beat LSU because Les Miles is an idiot. LSU's defensive line dominated Clemson's line for 55 minutes of that game... Which really shows how great Boyd played. Carolina is better right now.
