You are correct. It's one of the worst changes

to college football the NCAA has brought about.
There are a little under 900 collegiate football programs in the U.S. If there are 2000 in the portal, then EVERY PROGRAM would have to take at least two. True, some will take more; but I don't believe in a skinny second that all 2000 will be accepted. Thus, there are going to be a number of dejected and rejected young men without a home.
Deterrent...deterrent. That was the greatest attribute of the old transfer rule, which (to me) makes this current model ill-considered and patently condemnable.

There will be a lot of ex-football players who no longer have a scholarship.

I like the portal for reasons mentioned in other posts, but 2000 is crazy. If I’m entering the portal I’m going to have to feel pretty confident in my next destination. Coaches are forcing these kids out. Some leave because they don’t want to compete but I believe coaches are wanting to cut the dead wood. Heck they don’t do well they will get fired. Everyone needs 10 wins or the next big name will be taking your job. Domino affect and the kid will suffer in most cases but the boosters will stay happy. Sad state college football has become. All about the dollar bill.

Only about 1 in 8 players who enter the transfer portal are taken by another college. Most of the players entering the portal are giving up a college scholarships in an apparently vain hope of more playing time somewhere else. So the transfer portal screws the majority of the players out of a college scholarship.

Agree with your comments, but look at it this way. If they were not committed to the program they left, at least their departure opens a scholly for someone that might appreciate it. Not like all these kids were going to make a living playing football, and a very large % would not have gottena a degree, either. In that respect, our program is somewhat of an anomaly.

you r comments are fair and correct - you would think that most players can't really expect to make the NFL - they are getting a schollie, playing the game they love and then moving into the work place
but 2000 kids - so many kids looking for better - I can't believe they will land somewhere unless a lesser conference and keep playing - it seems like if that was it - they would have made some calls first - then moved to a lesser school to get a grad degree or finish up their BS degree or BA or whatever they have interest in.
it's just amazing .....

Student Loans to get a college education, and these football players are throwing away a free college education with both hands.
The truly terrible effect of the portal for most of these kids will hit when they don't wind up with a college degree at all, and try to compete in the real world job market. And, for the ones who don't find a new place to play football, that job search starts NOW.
