Tony Elliott having fun at new spot, says it's an honor to switch for Spiller

Tony Elliott made the transition from coaching the running backs to coaching tight ends this spring, and it was evident that he was not only having fun with the move but he was also attacking the job with a renewed sense of urgency. Full Story »

I've mouthed off about this before, but the article points out a significant issue that I've raised - and that is we have to get better on OL blocking or the TEs have to be taught to block better at the point of attack than they've been doing for a long time.

Tony Elliott says he's having fun teaching the TEs the receiving part of the job, but it sounds like he's learning the line blocking part of the job along with the TEs. I don't have an issue with that - at least he knows that they need to learn it.

The fact is that the TEs need to have both skills - it's one of the 3 hardest jobs in football - QB, C and TE. But without TE run-blocking blocking talent, the OL has to be extremely good. If the OL is marginal, the TEs have to be very good blockers.

There's another scenario that allows for marginal run-blocking by the OL and TEs - and that requires exceptional pass-blocking by the OL and RB coupled with extremely good talent at WR and slot.

It will be interesting to see what the TEs can do this year. I think we'll have a good group of WRs and RBs, so any improvement in the TEs should create a lot of opportunity - but I'd like to see them as versatile as possible.

TE coaching TE's? Who would have guessed? Coach E is a class act and leader who will help the team where he can best serve. Who will be calling plays this year? And will TE get the TE's more engaged in the O?

I wonder (being that he is the play caller) if this will mean more opportunities for the TE in the passing game and how that might affect TE recruiting in the future?

I don't think there's any question that they will be more involved in the passing attack.... they will. It seems that's where Tony Elliott is focused. That's a good thing.

The question that results is if they'll show (also) much needed improvement in run-blocking.
