Clemson center Akin Akingbala Picked up by Boston Celtics

CLEMSON -- Former Clemson basketball player Akin Akingbala has been picked up by the Boston Celtics, according to the team's website. He will be on the team's roster for the 2006 Vegas Summer League, which will take place between July 6 and July 14 in Las Vegas, NV. Akingbala's teammates on the squad will include players such as current Celtics player Ryan Gomes, 2006 draft pick Rajon Rondo, and fellow undrafted free agent Allan Ray of Villanova. The team's first game will be versus the Dallas Mavericks on July 8.

Akingbala earned team MVP honors in 2005-06 after averaging 12.1 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. He finished the year with eight double-doubles in his final 11 games. Akingbala ranked in the top 10 of the ACC in rebounds per game, offensive rebounds per game, and blocked shots per game. He shot 57.6 percent from the field as a senior. He earned his undergraduate degree in Marketing from Clemson in May.
