CLEMSON – Win number 1000 wasn’t pretty, but it didn’t have to be.

Four Clemson pitchers combined to hold visiting Wofford to one unearned run and stranded 10 runners on base as the 4th-ranked Tigers defeated the Terriers 5-1 at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

The win was the fifth in a row for Clemson, which improved to 6-1 overall, and was the Tigers' 1,000th all-time victory at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, which opened in 1970

“They played us tough,” Clemson head coach Jack Leggett said. “They did some some good things. Their kids played us tough and we didn't make very good adjustments at the beginning. They kept hanging in there. They scored the first run and we were able to answer quickly so we were able to relax a little bit.”

The teams were scoreless until the fourth inning, when the Terriers scored an unearned run to take a 1-0 lead.

The Tigers were able to tie the score in the bottom of the inning, with catcher Spencer Kieboom reaching first base with one out after being hit by a pitch. He advanced to second on a ground out by Will Lamb, and scored when Jon McGibbon lined a single to center field.

The Tigers added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth by taking advantage of Wofford miscues. Right field Chris Epps reach third on an error by the Wofford right fielder, and he scored Clemson’s second run on a sacrifice fly to left by shortstop Brad Miller. With two outs in the inning, first baseman Richie Shaffer reached on a throwing error by the third baseman, and he advanced to third on a single by John Hinson.

Wofford pitcher Gus White attempted to pick Hinson off first base, and his throwing error allowed Shaffer to score Clemson’s third run for a 3-1 lead.

Clemson added to its lead in the eighth inning. Pinch-hitter Dominic Attanasio led off with a single to left field and advanced to second on Stolz's second sacrifice bunt of the game. Epps reached on an infield single to move Attanasio to third, and then Epps stole second. Miller ripped a single to left field to score Attanasio. Miller was promptly caught off of first base, but he stayed in a rundown long enough to allow Epps to score from third base.

“We got ahead 3-1 and then scored those two runs at the end,” Leggett said. “We ran the bases pretty well. Chris Epps hustled really hard on that ball that was hit to right field. And then on that line drive to left we went back to the bag and tagged up. And then scored on that ball that got past the first baseman. Dominic came out and had a big hit at the end and we got a few bunts down.

“We did what we had to do offensively. It wasn't pretty. Defensively we played pretty well. We pitched well. Sarratt was good. Pohle was good and Jonathan Meyer had a big inning with that awesome pitch he made to get the guy out with bases loaded. And, Joe Moorefield did what he had to do.”

Kevin Pohle (1-1), a freshman from Saint Louis, MO, earned his first career victory. In 2.2 innings pitched in relief, he allowed three hits and no runs. Jonathan Meyer pitched 1.2 scoreless innings with three strikeouts, then Joseph Moorefield retired the only two batters he faced to close out the game. Starter Justin Sarratt, who missed most of 2010 due to injury, pitched 4.0 effective innings, yielding just three hits, one unearned run, and one walk with two strikeouts. The quartet helped Clemson extend its active streak of not allowing an earned run to 24 innings over three games.

Miller went 1-for-1 with two RBIs and three walks, while Epps scored two runs. Kieboom added two walks, a hit-by-pitch, and threw out two base stealers at second base.

The win was Clemson's 13th in a row in the series against Wofford. It was also the 100th all-time meeting between Clemson and Wofford in the series that began in 1898.

Clemson will face South Carolina three times at three different sites this weekend. The first matchup will be on Friday at 7:00 PM at Carolina Stadium in Columbia.

Leggett said he was looking forward to playing the Gamecocks this weekend.

“We will be thinking about the weekend now,” he said. “Scotty Weismann will go for us Friday. Take one game at a time. We'll go down there in that environment and see what we can do with things. It's a good part of the rivalry. It's a fun series. It's good to play three games at different sites because you have to keep your focus all weekend long. You have to play one at each other's park, and then go to the Greenville Drive stadium.

“They do a good job of rolling out the red carpet for each team. It's an awesome atmosphere. Hopefully we will get some good weather so we can all concentrate on playing ball. I'd have to lie to you and tell you that guys aren't looking ahead to the weekend when there's a big weekend series or a rivalry series. We tried to stay focused on what we had to do against Wofford. They played well and played us tough. We were able to capitalize on it. We threw out a couple of guys in hit and run situations and changed a couple of innings that could've gone the other way.”
