Watson on winning Davey O'Brien Award

by - Assoc. Editor -

Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson won the Davey O'Brien Award at the Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday evening, joining Ty Detmer, Danny Wuerffel, and Jason White as the only two-time winners of the award.

"I was just sitting there and hoping my name was getting called," Watson said after winning the award. "I had great confidence in myself after what I did this season, and it was great to bring this back home."

Watson will now turn his attention to the Heisman ceremony this weekend, but he says that is out of his control.

"I have a lot of confidence in how I played over the course of the season. I had a lot of confidence in winning this trophy, too. At the end of the day, it's up to the voters and it's in God's hands, and I just appreciate the opportunity with all of the other athletes and just enjoy my visit."

One of Watson's biggest accomplishments, however, is off the field.

"I finished my last exam Wednesday morning and next Thursday around this time I will have a degree in my hand as a graduate," Watson said. "It's one of the most important things, walking across that stage and getting the degree is one of my biggest accomplishments and the one my mom will be most proud of."

Watson said he is just going all these special opportunities he gets.

"It hasn't hit me yet because it's just getting started. Just knowing that I have finished school and will go to Baltimore and New York. It will be a fun weekend and I will embrace all the moments and soak it all in. I am taking it all in and enjoying it."

For the season, Watson has completed 329 of 487 passes for 3914 yards and 37 touchdowns. He ranks fourth in the nation in completions, fifth in touchdown passes and eighth in completion percentage and eighth in total offense. His 37 touchdown passes are a Clemson season record.

Watson finished third in the Heisman voting last season as he threw for 3,512 yards with 30 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
