Memorial Stadium is known for its raucous orange-clad crowd and Howard’s Rock, which the Tigers rub for good luck before every game. Former coach Frank Howard turned the rock–a gift from friend Samuel Columbus Jones, who claimed it was from Death Valley in California–into a motivational object in the late 1960s, when he allegedly told his players, “Give me 110 percent or keep your filthy hands off of my rock.”
