Puerto Rico Tip-off moved to Orlando due to Zika virus

CLEMSON, S.C. — Clemson basketball’s regular season tournament originally scheduled for Nov. 17-20 in San Juan, Puerto Rico has changed location. Due to concerns over the Zika virus, the Tire Bros Puerto Rico Tip-Off has been relocated to Orlando, Fla. The tournament field will remain as originally announced with Clemson, Arizona State, Davidson, Missouri, Northern Iowa, Oklahoma, Tulane and Xavier.

The Tigers are set to face the Davidson Wildcats in the opening game of the tournament on Thursday, November 17 at 11 a.m. The winner will face the winner of the opening-round matchup between Missouri and Xavier in the second round. The championship game of the event is set for 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 20.

“We enjoy the beauty and accommodations that are afford in Puerto Rico and wanted to make every effort in playing the event in San Juan, but the concern for student-athlete and spectator welfare became the primary driver in the decision,” said Pete Derzis, senior vice president at ESPN Events. “We intend to return to Puerto Rico in the future.”

This will be Clemson’s second trip to ESPN’s Wide World of Sports Complex. The Tigers previously competed in the 2012 Old Spice Classic at the same venue.
