Clemson yearbook archives go digital

by -

CLEMSON — Clemson University’s special collections library has digitized the complete run of Clemson’s yearbook, Taps, from the first volume in 1899 through 2012.

Through a partnership with the Internet Archive, the Taps were scanned cover-to-cover in full color. Online visitors can page through volumes, search the full text, download PDFs and view them on Kindles.

The project was made possible through the LYRASIS Digitization Collaborative, a Sloan Foundation grant-subsidized program that has made digitization easy and affordable for libraries and cultural institutions across the country.

The first Clemson yearbook, The Clemson College Chronicle, was published in 1899. The yearbook had several names before finally becoming Taps in 1908.

Also available digitally are archives of the Clemson undergraduate announcements catalog and the Clemson Chronicle, the student literary journal. In the coming months additional publications will be made available: Clemson College Newsletter (newsletter for faculty and staff of Clemson University), The Agrarian (School of Agriculture student publication) and Bobbin & Beaker (official journal of the Textile School).

When all these publications have been digitized, more than 100,000 pages of full color, text-searchable Clemson-related materials will be available for researchers worldwide. For each issue of Taps, optical character recognition was applied to make every word on every page fully searchable.

“We are very excited to be able to provide resources unique to Clemson University for access, and Taps is just one item that we have digitized for public access,” Library Dean Kay Wall said. “We trust that researchers, alumni and the broader community will learn of friends, family members and the university’s history through this valuable resource.
