Clemson connection with Kentucky Derby

by - Assoc. Editor -

The pursuit of the 2015 Triple Crown in horse racing starts on Saturday at Churchhill Downs. The 141st running of the Kentucky Derby will be starting at 6:625 EST and twenty horses will battle it out on the 1.25 mile racetrack.

The race horse Dortmund is owned by a Clemson alum named Kaleem Shah. Shah earned a Masters of Science in computer engineering from Clemson and is the CEO and founder of CALNET which is one of America's 500 fastest growing companies.

Dortmund is the son of Big Brown, who was the last undefeated winner in 2008 and is trained by Bob Baffert.

The favorite to win is Pharoah with 13/5 odds but Dortmund has the second highest odds at 15/4.

However, undefeated Dortmund will be in post 8 and should have a fast start out of the gate.

According to wikipedia - Dortmund (foaled 7 February 2012) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse. In 2014 he was undefeated in three races and established himself as one of the best juveniles in California with a win in the Los Alamitos Futurity. In the early part of 2015 he moved into contention for the American Triple Crown races with wins in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes, San Felipe Stakes and Santa Anita Derby.

Coverage starts on NBCSN from noon to 4 PM EST and then changes over to its parent network NBC from 4-7 PM.
