Postgame Clemson Notes

Team

Clemson’s three interceptions were the Tigers’ most in a game since totaling four at Syracuse on Oct. 5, 2013.

Clemson recorded its second shutout of the season. The Tigers also shut out NC State earlier this year. It marked the first time since 1998 that Clemson had multiple shutouts in one season.

Only eight of Georgia State’s 66 offensive plays were snapped in Clemson territory. Georgia State did not start an offensive play inside Clemson’s 25 yard line as well.

Postgame Coaches’ Quotes

Clemson Head Coach Dabo Swinney

“I’m really proud of Cole (Stoudt). He didn’t have a bad throw in the first half.”

“We wanted to feature Tyshon (Dye). We wanted to see where he was and he responded.”

“We tried to play everybody in the second half and I think we were able to do that.”

“Two shutouts in one season hasn’t happened since 1998. It was a great performance defensively.”

“One thing that we had to get changed this week was the turnover margin. Good to see us come out on top in that.”

“We couldn’t complete a pass last week. He ( Cole StoudtCole Stoudt

was a bullet.”

Georgia State Head Coach Trent Miles

On the effort today:

“Our effort was really good today. Our kids always give a good effort. That wasn’t the problem. You can’t turn the ball over three times to a defense like that, and then I consider it four times, because we had something like a 10-yard punt. That’s a turnover too, so that’s really four turnovers in the first half. With a well-coached team like that, you’re not giving yourself a chance. We don’t have a magical 28-point play. To go out and try to score 28 points on that defense, that’s tough on anybody.”

On the early gameplan, which involved a heavy dose of long passes along the sideline:

“We wanted to get the early score, but we also had some plays called. Based on the coverage, the routes adjusted to something else. Give them credit. They’ve got an excellent defense. They’ve got an excellent football team. Great program. Great coaching staff. You get behind them and there’s really nothing you can do about it.”

On what the team can take away from this game:

“Our defense can take away some confidence considering the fact that, from where we’ve been this season and some of the things we’ve struggled through, that they came out and competed at a high level against one of the best programs in the nation. We’re not happy with losing. Our expectation is to win every time we step on the field, but there are things to build from with that for us, and there’s things that we have to correct.”

Postgame Clemson Player Quotes

Tyshon Dye, RB

On workload:

“It felt great. I want to thank the offensive line for opening up some holes, making me look good and thank Coach (Swinney) for calling my number.”

On returning from injury:

“I got winded a little bit, but once I got rolling, I started feeling better.”

Mike Williams, WR

On the play of Tyshon Dye:

“It was great to go out there and see Tyshon get some carries. We knew he was battling through, and just to see him go out there and make some plays…that was big.”

On his touchdown catch:

“It was an option route. I could either slant or run a post-corner. The safety came down, so the middle of the field was wide open. I just took it and caught the ball for a touchdown.”

On mentally preparing for South Carolina:

Mentally, we have to prepare like we have been doing all year. You try and say every game is the same, but it’s not. We need to try and limit turnovers and not shoot ourselves in the foot.”

On looking at the “South Carolina Clock” in the player facility:

That clock has been running for a long time, so it’s crazy that it’s already down to a week. We’ve been getting ready for it, and it’s going to be a huge part of our season.”

On playing defense at home:

“It’s big every time we step out on the field. I feel like the home atmosphere feels so good, from Tiger Walk to running around on the field. You see all these fans cheering for us, and that’s a big part of it, but I didn’t even know that our defense was better at home than on the road.”

On winning the turnover battle:

“If you look last week at Georgia Tech, if we don’t give up those two turnovers, we’re still in it in the fourth quarter. We gave up two “pick-sixes,” but you can’t give up two turnovers, especially against a team like South Carolina. I’m probably going to watch them tonight and tomorrow, because we want to give ourselves every edge to get that ball.
