Bowers Making Most of Opportunity

After spending the majority of the season’s first ten games in a reserve role (at both the defensive end and tackle positions), Bowers has started the past two games at end. The results have been a welcome surprise for a defensive line that has struggled with injuries all season.

Bowers played significantly in the game at Green Bay prior to Thanksgiving, and had a pair of tackles while causing disruption in the backfield on a handful of occasions. Against Tennessee, he made his first career start and had a single tackle although he did register three quarterback hurries. But Bowers really showed his potential in last week’s loss to Carolina.

Against the Panthers, Bowers had eight tackles - five of which were for a loss - and a 1.5 sacks. The lanky defensive end had the mobile Cam Newton moving around all afternoon and even managed to corral him on a couple of occasions. More importantly, Bowers made tackles in the run game. Most of the rap on Bowers was that he was insufficient against the rush. In Sunday’s loss to Carolina (against a power running team in the Panthers), Bowers showed that he can hold his own.
