Tommy Bowden on being on the coaching hot seat |
Tommy Bowden has a blog that he writes about several subjects including his experiences while coaching the Clemson football program.
Bowden's latest blog entry discusses coaching in the hot seat after a few losses. "I knew exactly what Butch Jones and Charlie Strong felt like after their wins on Saturday," Bowden wrote. "Jones, the Head Coach at the University of Tennessee, defeated his SEC rival, the University of Georgia for his first signature win. Strong, the Head Coach at the University of Texas, defeated their longtime rival, the University of Oklahoma. Both of these coaches were on the proverbial “hot seat”." "Only those of us that have been a head coach at a high pressure football program can fully appreciate the relief they felt after the game. In contrast, I can also relate to the disappointment felt by Bob Stoops, the Head Coach at Oklahoma and Georgia’s Mark Richt. However, you can only enjoy the euphoria from the win for 24 hours, before you start your preparation for the next game. It’s the loses that seem to linger for a lot longer. Over the course as the Head at Clemson University, I had found myself on the hot seat, cold seat, warm seat, until I eventually experienced the ejection seat!!!" Bowden was 72-45 in 10 seasons with Clemson including a 3-5 record in Bowl games. He was ACC coach of the year in 1999 and 2003.
