In Focus: Deantwan Whitehead

Clemson has 13 verbal commitments and the focus has been narrowed. Over the next few days we will highlight some of the hottest names on Clemson’s recruiting board.

Deantwan Whitehead was once verbally committed to Clemson. Whitehead retracted his commitment shortly thereafter. When Whitehead committed to Clemson, he was virtually an unknown in the recruiting world. He has come full circle in that regard.

Now, Whitehead is considered one of the top defensive end prospects in the country. Whitehead is a premium edge rusher, and he can now virtually pick his destination for the next four years.

At 6-6 225 pounds, Whitehead has the potential to be a dominating presence at the next level. Clemson wide receivers coach Dabo Swinney has never let off of Whitehead. This would be another gem for Swinney, and possibly the biggest one yet for one of the South’s top recruiters.

Whitehead has remained non-committal on any favorites since he backed off of his commitment. We believe this will be a battle between Clemson and Alabama. The Tide faltered down the stretch, but they made up huge ground with Whitehead, who was previously set on going out of state.

Coach Swinney has strong ties in the Alabama area, and he has had success in Alabama. This would be by far the biggest prize he has landed from the state. Alabama and Auburn clearly want Whitehead, and players normally do not escape from the two in-state schools.
