Post Tajh

This fall is very important when it comes to the future of the quarterback position at Clemson. This fall we could learn a lot about who will have the inside track when it comes to replacing Tajh Boyd but my guess is that this competition will continue for several months next year.

In January, five-star quarterback DeShawn Watson will join Cole Stoudt and Chad Kelly on campus and the three-man race will take place starting with All-In Drills.

Stoudt will have the most experience. The rising junior has played in 14 games over the last two seasons and has taken 171 snaps. The Ohio native has completed 39 of 60 passes for 327 yards for three touchdowns and one interception. On the ground he has carried the ball 15 times for 49 yards.

Stoudt is not as physically gifted as the other two players. He does not have the arm strength, speed or quickness of Kelly or Watson but he does have experience which is valuable.

Kelly is an extremely talented player who might have the best skill set of the trio but he is coming off of ACL surgery in the spring and is expected to miss most of this fall. This fall would have been the chance for Kelly to make a statement in the quarterback race but he will have to spend most of the time rehabbing instead of competing for playing time this fall.

Watson is the most highly regarded out of high school. Stoudt was a three-star prospect and Kelly was a four-star selection. Watson is rated by rivals.com as the nation's top quarterback.

Watson's numbers are eye-popping. As a junior, Watson hit on 305-of-434 passes for 4,011 yards, 50 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He completed 70% of his passes. He also rushed for 1,430 yards and 24 touchdowns helping his team to the AAAAA State Championship. He had 5,441 total yards and 74 touchdowns.

As a sophomore, Watson hit on 229-of-337 passes for 3,221 yards with 41 touchdowns with just six interceptions. Watson rushed 156 times for 1,073 yards and 16 touchdowns, leading Gainesville to a 12-2 record. He had 4,294 yards and 58 touchdowns.

As a freshman, Watson led Gainesville to a 10-3 mark, passing for 2,100 yards, 17 touchdowns and five interceptions. He added 500 rushing yards and five touchdowns. For the season Watson had 2,600 total yards and 22 touchdowns.

Entering his senior season, Watson has passed for 9,332 yards with 108 touchdowns and only 19 interceptions. He has rushed for 3,003 yards and 45 touchdowns. Watson has 12,335 total yards and has accounted for 153 touchdowns in three seasons.

Many Clemson fans are also considering the idea that Chad Morris may be in line for a head coaching position elsewhere this spring, so January could be a very interesting month around Clemson when it comes to quarterbacks.

It should be a terrific competition next spring practice as well and I will be interested to see if a starter emerges in the spring or will the race continue into this time next year.

The only certainty when it comes to the quarterback in 2014 and beyond is the fact that the bar has been set extremely high by Boyd.
