Hoops Struggles

Clemson basketball is a frustrating animal.  I have been a Clemson basketball fan for over 40 years, but sometimes it feels more like 80.

The second half of the Clemson-South Carolina game Friday night in Columbia looked like something we have seen before.  A grand total of 15 points in the final 20 minutes against the arch rival was hard to watch, but it was not a shock.

Perhaps the most disappointing aspect of Friday night was having to admit the the best team on the floor was not wearing orange.  It was only one game but it was clear which program is in better shape at this point.  This does not sit well with Tiger fans and it shouldn't.

Clemson had beaten South Carolina 14 of the last 20 games, but Friday night the programs looked like they were headed in two different directions.  That's hard for a Clemson fan to admit.

It's also hard to watch your arch rival play harder and appear to be more skilled.

This is a program that needs a break and needs to create some momentum.  They had some momentum coming off of the NIT last season, but that seems like light years ago.

I am not a basketball aficionado but I have no idea what the offensive identity is at this point.  Turnovers and foul trouble seem to be a major issue in too many games.  Depth is also a major issue.

The Tigers beat Oakland in Littlejohn Coliseum in one of the final pre-conference games of the season, but issues are still present.  As bad as this early season has been, it looks like it could get worse in the tough ACC this season.

I am looking for a reason to get excited about this team and this program.  Donte GranthamDonte Grantham

brings energy and athleticism, but there is little reason to get excited about any other player currently in the program.

Where is the program headed?  What is the identity of the program?  How do you brand the program?

has a difficult job.  He has to find a way to salvage something from this season. He has to try instill confidence in a group that has little to be confident about them.

In the long term, he will have to create some excitement and play an entire home season in Greenville next season. Then he has to find a way to energize the fan base to open a new building the following year.

At this point, both the long term and short term there are more questions than answers.  I am not sure what the answers are and where they can potentially come from.  But this is nothing new to us long time Clemson basketball fans.
