Spiller Named Top Kickoff Returner in College Football

Clemson, SC—Clemson’s C.J. Spiller was named the top kick off returner in the nation by Collegefootballperformance.com on Tuesday. The announcement was made by Brad Smith, executive director of the College Football Performance Awards. Spiller will be presented a trophy at Clemson’s Spring Game in April.

Spiller had 23 kickoff returns for 755 yards and four touchdowns this season. His 32.8 average on kickoff returns led the ACC and ranked third best in the nation. His four kickoff returns for touchdowns set a Clemson and ACC record. He concluded his career with seven kickoff returns for touchdown, an all-time NCAA record. He also had a punt return for a touchdown this year, giving him five kick returns for touchdowns this year and eight for his career. He tied an NCAA record for total kick returns for touchdowns in a career.



Spiller finished his Clemson career with 7588 all-purpose yards, second best in NCAA history. He had an ACC record 2680 all-purpose yards in 2009 when he scored 21 touchdowns, a Clemson single season record. He had 52 total touchdowns in his career, including 21 that were at least 50 yards.

Spiller graduated from Clemson on December 17, then was named the Most Valuable Player of the Music City Bowl when the Tigers defeated Kentucky 21-13. He was also the MVP of the ACC Championship game against Georgia Tech, the first MVP for a losing team in conference championship history. He was also the MVP of the ACC during the regular season.
