Kelly Continues to Impress Bowden

CLEMSON - It's beginning to sound like a broken record - or, perhaps for this generation, a skipping CD - but another Clemson practice ended with head coach Tommy Bowden praising Aaron Kelly.

The redshirt freshman wideout had another big catch in live scrimmage work Wednesday afternoon, and continues to stake his claim on one of the starting receiver spots.

As he did Tuesday night, Bowden praised Kelly's consistency.

"You'd have to check with (wide receivers coach) Dabo (Swinney), but again I don't think he's dropped a ball yet," Bowden said. "It's getting to where it's going to be a surprise if he drops one. That's the way Rod Gardner was when he was here.

"Aaron's not to that level of player yet, but he's showing that kind of consistency."

Kelly began showing flashes of his immense talent during spring practice, Bowden said.

"He went the last five (spring) practices doing the same thing, so it's nice to see it carry over. It doesn't always carry over for every player."

The next big test for Kelly, and the entire Clemson roster, comes today and Saturday.

Friday is the first of five scheduled two-a-day practices. The team will work in full pads in the morning, then in shoulder pads and shorts in the afternoon.

Saturday is the first major scrimmage of camp, a three-hour session scheduled in the morning. The scrimmage will wrap up nine straight days of practice to open fall camp.

Meanwhile, Wednesday's workouts concluded with a series of 100-yard sprints for conditioning purposes, Bowden following through on his promise to work the team hard in the 90-plus degree heat.

On the injury front, Nathan Bennett was in a yellow jersey, suffering from the effects of a virus. Bobby Hutchinson was in yellow, as well, nursing the ankle he sprained on Tuesday.

Dorrell Scott was carted off toward the end of practice after struggling with the heat.
