A guy said the other day Brownell never won a

tournament game. He was incorrect.

Clemson has 11 tournament appearances in history. Brownell has one of them.

Clemson has 9 tournament wins, ever. Brownell has one of them.

This is not a pro or anti Brownell post. Just setting the record straight.

He won a play-in game (which shouldn't count as an NCAA win)

Feb 27, 2017, 11:36 AM

and he did it with Purnell's players.

Feb 27, 2017, 11:57 AM

And Purnell never won a NCAA tournament game with his own players!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No it definitely counts as an NCAA win.

Feb 27, 2017, 12:24 PM [ in reply to He won a play-in game (which shouldn't count as an NCAA win) ]

That makes you incorrect. Sorry.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

oh yay....

Feb 27, 2017, 12:36 PM

i'm doing backflips - but please continue with this ridiculous premise and thread

I for one am glad you are stopping. You are one of the most ignorant posters ever. You obviously think very highly of your own opinion, unlike the rest of us - RockHillTiger

It's not about the yay factor, at all.

Feb 27, 2017, 12:47 PM

It's simply about the fact it unquestionably counts as NCAA win. That's the only premise.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

and it matters why??

Feb 27, 2017, 1:00 PM

hint: it doesn't

I didn't say you were incorrect, I said it

Feb 27, 2017, 1:01 PM [ in reply to No it definitely counts as an NCAA win. ]

shouldn't really count. I don't see how needing to win a game to get into the actual 64-team field is better than getting in outright. We lost in the 1st round - the same as the Purnell years. They can call it the "Round of 64" or whatever it is now, but it's still the 1st round to me.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

His one win was in the First Four, which shouldn't count.

Feb 27, 2017, 11:36 AM

Once we got to the REAL first round of the tournament, we lost...not a huge success.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He won with Oliver Purnell's recruits and

Feb 27, 2017, 11:50 AM

poof, it was gone.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agreed. He did it when Purnell didn't.

Feb 27, 2017, 12:31 PM

Speaking of didn't, Purnell didn't recruit anyone behind those players either. He recruited some good players, never won a truly meaningful game, didn't recruit any more players, then poof, he was gone.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If you are somehow arguing that Brownell has done a better

Feb 27, 2017, 1:13 PM

job than Purnell, then you have lost your mind. It's a ridiculous argument. Purnell took us to three straight tourneys. And yes...we lost in the first round each time. But wouldn't it be nice to have the opportunity to lose a first round game again someday?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Purnell left an NCAA Tournament roster and Brownell

Feb 27, 2017, 1:15 PM [ in reply to Agreed. He did it when Purnell didn't. ]

pissed it away. Imagine if Brownell had followed Larry Shyatt, he never would have sniffed the NCAA tournament.

You don't seem to realize that it is Brownell's responsibility to recruit players for his team. Once Coach Purnell left, the recruiting was in the hands of your hero, Brad Brownell.

But, like our tournament hopes under Brownell - poof the recruits were gone.

Was a play in game basically

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Splitting hairs

Feb 27, 2017, 12:18 PM

It was a "play-in" game. Big schmiel.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not a big deal.

Feb 27, 2017, 12:37 PM

But it's not splitting hairs either. It is recorded as an NCAA tournament win.

Do you think people who won games after the field was expanded to 64 should exclude their wins?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dude, hate to break the bad news to you, but sometimes

Feb 27, 2017, 12:42 PM

teams choose to play defense first.

Feb 27, 2017, 1:15 PM [ in reply to Not a big deal. ]

UAB...freaking UAB...two days before the real tournament even started?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Maybe they meant meaningful tournament game.
