And it probably costs just as much to operate. That is pocket change compared to how much these coaches bring to their schools.

Near as I can tell, Clemson is operating a CJ2+, made Cessna. It's an entry level corporate jet, highly fuel efficient, with excellent short field capability. It can go anywhere in the US except it probaly can't reach the west coast without a fuel stop.
Michigan is operating a Lear60. Made by Bombardier (Montreal, Canada) Bombardier purchased LearJet in the late 90's. Lear60 is a screaming performer as far as climb performance goes. Tons of thrust, but a relatively small wing. Down side of a Lear60 is that it has relatively high takeoff & landing speeds and therefore requires relatively long runways. From Ann Arbor, Mi, a Lear60 can reach anywhere in the US nonstop, easily.
Lear60 is the sexier, more expensive choice. CJ2+ makes more sense from the perspective of the mission Clemson is using the plane for. CJ2+ can land and takeoff from thousands of airports that a Lear60 can't legally go to.

Looked it up. It's a CJ3. All the same applies, it's a slightly stretched CJ2

Can't trust shipping these days. The guy knows the rule book but the rule book is backasswords. I would almost feel better if he gave the families money instead of literally burning it up hopping all over the country to put together a team. That's what the system calls for, he knows he can't win with talent just from his region.

Dunno if he was paying players so much as pushing the envelope every other way...this actually strikes me as smart.
So Harbaugh aggressively negotiated, and up front, a big chunk of change so he and his staff could hop on jets and zip all over the country? If you're going to recruit nationally, necessary. If you DON'T negotiate this up front in your contract, you know the accountants and bean-counters at Michigan are going to put a major crunch on your travel expenses.
What's the issue here? Michigan spent a lot of money on plane rides? So do a lot of schools. I'd expect Stanford - his old stop, which definitely recruits nationally, far more so even than Michigan - probably spent far more.

And just what do you think our jet costs to own/operate? All of them are incredibly expensive.

That's a fairly complicated question. Some things I don't know, like.....did they write a check for it or did they finance it?
Things I can get close on
Variable operating cost $1000/hr Engine insurance (it's the most expensive part of the plane) 150/ hr each engine. Hull insurance & liabilty insurance 30k/yr Hangar rent 18-24k per year if they rent. Clemson might own the hangar & have a 50-99 year lease with the city for the land. 2 crew 1 wrench, 200-250k/year. Crew training 20-25k initial.
What it costs is actually the wrong question to ask. Here's why. 1. Dabo is the 1st or 2nd highest paid employee in the state. When you charter, you have zero control over quality. You don't know how the plane has been maintained. You don't know how the crew has been trained. It's playing Russian roulette with your CEO. 2. The organization that Dabo runs brings in hundreds of millions of dollars to the state every year. You're an idiot if you don't protect that. 3. If everybody else is moving around and making decisions at 400-450kts (and they are) and you're not....you're gonna lose. If I'm sure of anything, I'm sure everybody at Clemson enjoys winning. This isn't a luxury, it's a necessity. 4. In this day and age, almost everything can be done over a computer from one side of the planet to the other. But human beings want to look each other in the eye and shake hands when it comes to trust.
That's why they need the plane.
The other side of the question is.....what would it cost to NOT own a plane? I believe the answer to that question would ultimately be.....hundreds of millions of dollars per year.
