Travis Etienne vs. Kentucky's Benny Snell
Oct 4, 2018, 12:36 PM

Out of curiosity, I went over to the ESPN Heisman Watch link to see where the contenders are stacking up according to the mostly incompetent talking heads.
Mind you, I put no stock in this award as "Best Football Player" is essentially "most popular offensive player that plays on one of the top teams", but one player stood out to me.
Kentucky's Benny Snell, who is the ONLY RB listed on their "watch".
However, the numbers show that Travis Etienne is the far better player.
Snell: 639 yards on 115 carries, (5.6 ypc) 8 TDs
Etienne: 594 yards on 73 carries, (8.1 ypc) 8 TDs
In short, Snell has 45 more yards with 42 more carries, while Etienne has scored the same amount of touchdowns and is rushing for almost 30% more yards per carry.
Just goes to show how worthless these polls and awards really are. However, I'd love to see Etienne get into the conversation just because he really is THAT good.

Not even close between those 2. ETN is by far the better back!

I could look this up of course, but since you're somewhat passionate up about it maybe you'd be willing. How does the competition each has faced compared?

We've both played two creampuffs, two decent teams, and a mediocre power-5 team.

In terms of the P5 teams each have faced in terms of run defense:
Snell: Mississippi State - 31st Florida - tied for 85th South Carolina - tied for 85th
Etienne - A&M - 6th GT - 56th Syracuse - tied for 75th
So I'd actually say advantage Etienne there although the overall level of competition has been fairly close. I think a few things work in favor of Snell currently. Etienne wasn't heavily involved in our offense at least on a consistent basis last year, while Snell had over 1,300 yards last season. Then Snell has been putting up numbers this season in each game, while Etienne wasn't heavily used the first 2 games, and has started blowing up the past 2-3 games.
Also, Snell is pretty much looked at as the biggest reason why Kentucky is unbeaten so far while Etienne is viewed as part of a great overall team. If Etienne keeps up his pace of the last few weeks then he'll be on more of these types of lists very soon.

Snell is from an SEC school which trumps any kind of numbers you throw out there. The pundits don't care about reality, only association.

Being outspoken, brash and flashy "just means more" to E$PN and the talking heads. Think about this...Just how popular and how much more on the NFL radar and just how much more often Hunter Renfrow would be on ESPN if he were as flashy, and boastful as some other players are.

I think Renfrow is pretty much a household name IMO. I think the attention he gets is about as much attention a guy whose career high in numbers for a season are 60 catches for 602 yards. As for the NFL, I think he'll get a shot there and probably do well, but a guy with his size with decent, but not elite speed, is never going to be a heavily talked about guy on NFL draft boards.

Heisman is a joke

It used to be a real award, but the powers that be chose to make it a perk for voters and the committee instead of safeguarding its historical reputation for excellence. John Heisman would take a flamethrower to the whole process if he knew what they have done in his name. The whole thing is a morality play in why leadership matters. It only takes a couple of puke weak poeple to destroy a hundred years of excellence overnight.

Heisman had always been a joke

Most national awards are jokes and have been. Going back to the early Heismans as well just like all the MNC's through the years. Jokes. But that's ok. Awards like these are the results of vites made by imperfect people with imperfect information.
In this imperfect person's opinion, I believe there are many individuals who deserved the Heisman but were on horrific or slightly known teams.
Its always been a popularity contest driven by regional voting. Going all the way back when Army and Notre Dame had a strangle hold on the awards.

I believe it is “schnell.” The meaning you describe is correct.

It's good to have the numbers on your side but you can throw them out, turn on the tape, and see that ETN is better than Snell and Love and whoever else espn always mentions. He's the best running back in the country

I don't disagree at all with the comparison and conclusion - ETN is amazing.
But make no mistake - Benny Snell will be a starting NFL running back. He's a beast. I've watched a few of their games (buddy of mine is a huge Kentucky fan). He's fast, powerful, plays to contact...sound familiar? ETN in a blue jersey, but asked to do a lot more because of their lack of weapons.

To be fair, Clemson has a lot better O-line than Kentucky
Oct 4, 2018, 2:25 PM
|
|
But yes, ETN should be in the conversation along with Snell. David Montgomery of ISU should be in the conversation, too, but his O-line is a dumpster fire.

i have a friend that lives in Louisiana and huge LSU fan and graduate. He told me last year that Travis was the one guy whom they absolutely hated losing. He thought he would be another on their long list of great running backs.

Kentucky plays at TAMU this week, so we can wait 2 more days and have a much better understanding of both players.
Personally, I admire BOTH of these amazing players. They will both play on Sundays IMO.

Not according to the stats. Sample sizes are small but by comparison our run Ds faces are stronger.
