Make sure you have extra food, generator is working with plenty of gas, top off your gas tank, make sure your cell phone is charged and have a communication plan in place to stay in touch with friends and family. Be sure to have paper maps available as well.

Don't recall any of this in 2017.

I have college students who are mad they still have to come to class when other profs have cancelled.

My response is because this is a science class and if you don’t learn anything else, maybe you will remember that while an eclipse is cool, it’s not a societal menace like an 1/8 of an inch of snow.

Besides, I bought eclipse glasses for everyone and I don’t think I’m going to live long enough to use them for the next one.

The really sad thing is that idiots will freak out while driving and cause unnecessary wrecks (more than they already do)

I remember driving to class at Clemson with 4 inches of snow on the roads.

In a Camaro. FUN times. They would have shut down Columbia over for half that much snow.

Why are people cancelling things?

I just found out that greenville schools have made it an e-learning day... but why? Step outside and let the kids use glasses to see the partial for about 10 seconds and then head back in. If it was a full here, i would understand alittle but more.

Like you said, hey, this will be a fun science day to lear all sorts of neat things about an eclipse and actually get to see part of one.

I just dont get it.

Took going down 15 replies to see the first glimmer of truth. Sad state of affairs IMHO.

Seriously, only rational answer I can think of is liability.

I understand if it was like 2017 and a total eclipse. They delayed the first day of school here in Lexington for it. But for a partial eclipse, normal day IMO. Schools don't want kids out at recess looking up and getting blinded. Let them do that on mom and dad's dime/time. Only excuse I can think of that remotely makes sense.

Lexington is having school today, but no recess. Problems will happen on the bus ride home today, possibly.

It may be liability driven, it may just be in the interest of protecting the

youth.

I think 3:05 is the time where the sun is blocked, so it goes on for what maybe an hour on each side of that?

Elementary schools round these parts dismiss at like 2:15 or 2:30. I think middle school at 3:00 or something like that.

Ain't nobody got glasses for all them kids. I'd have to think an e-learning day could potentially prevent some curious kid from getting their vision damaged.

A single e-learning day in 2024 shouldn't be that big of a deal I wouldn't think.

How bout just saying... kids, dont look at the sun.

You could do the hole in the paper plate trick and let them watch it that way.

It just makes no sense to me.

it's one of the few perfect times to show kids the real-time wonders of nature

and science.

They should be keeping kids LONGER at school today to fully teach them about the eclipse and astronomy through actual observation of the real event, but they evidently have zero interest in this.

They'll probably show them a boring video of it tomorrow, totally missing the opportunity given.

Pretty sad. Illustrates the priorities of the education system.

Welp, sounds easy enough. I'd think kids in the 6-13 yr old age group

would probably be MORE tempted to look.

Imagine the logistics of the "hole in the paper thing" with an entire elementary school during dismissal.
