I can respect an agricultural & engineering school with a strong military heritage. On the other hand, I'd be perfectly happy if the bats under the Congress Bridge would go on a rabies rampage through Austin.

Austin is no less than a million times better than College Station

Austin has everything. I know you're probably thinking its bad because some political reason. But it's got a great mix of Texan feel, college town, hipster, great food, tech and more. Vibrant downtown, river that you can kayak on etc
College station is nothing at all except the university. It's not pretty whatsoever, many of the buildings are eye sores and it's pretty difficult to get to.

Yeah well said about Austin. It's a pretty neat city. Kinda like a big town. Of course that was a while ago. Couldn't tell you what it's like currently.

I visited Texas for the first time ever a couple of months ago, spending a weekend in Austin for a bachelor party. It's definitely a cool city. The food was fantastic, and the culture was really cool. I'm not sure I could ever live there, but it's a very cool place to visit.
I'm hoping to visit again this fall for a UT game, as I recently learned one of my friends will be transferred there for work.

I was also there a month ago. The university and stadium were pretty awesome. No parking around the area...kinda wondered where people tailgate.
Enjoyed the Texas State Museum nearby.
Thought Austin was too crowded. People drive like ######## there. Saw a couple of wrecks happen while driving around.
6th street had aggressive panhandlers. Wasn't real impressed with the city...just my opinion.
Went to San Antonio as well. Liked it a lot more. Lot of history and felt it was more laid back.

I lived in San Antonio for 2 years

and my gf at the time lived in Austin (very near UT) so I went up to ATX fairly often.
The traffic in Austin is a killer for sure. Each time I drove up there, no matter what time of day it was I would come to a stop for at least a little bit when approaching the city. I once drove in around 2am on a Wednesday and still came to a stop. The road system just isn't as up to date as the population. San Antonio I rarely ever ran into much traffic because there were many better highway options and routes.
For me I really liked the University of Texas element of Austin. San Antonio has no such University feel. 6th street I believe is fairly overrated, there are parts toward the end where many many homeless hang out, some of which can be quite threatening.
I don't think I prefer one over the other. Both cities are pretty cool with tons of things to do.

College Station $ucks for a college town. Terrible tailgating also. Good game atmosphere. But it is not Athens, Madison, Austin, or many other great college towns.

before the game.Bought my first beer. After that Aggie fans picked up the tab. One cool thing in the Dixie Chicken every 20 minutes they would play Tiger Rag and then the A&M fight song. Stayed too long though. Went to the Midnight Cheer but hardly remember anything. People were great!

Got a good buddy living here that's an A&M grad. He took us to the game there last time around. We lost the game but had a great time. Tailgating is no where near what we have, but great bbq/food and bars and more importantly super nice fans. Can't wait to go again.
