Can DW4 elevate the Browns
Mar 20, 2022, 11:25 PM

from being ...well...the Cleveland Browns ? I say it's not out of the question. He's elite . In his last season on the Texans...without Hopkins and no running game to speak of he played lights out . He was statistically 4th overall for NFL QBs that year behind only Rodgers , Brady and Wilson.
Cleveland ia a slightly better team than the one he just left. So , I ask again...can Deshaun Watson make Cleveland a consistent winner and a threat in the AFC ?

but I think Cincy is going to control that division for a few years with their receivers.

Pittsburgh has a great defense and they've gotten better this offseason at least on the books. Gonna be tough for him , but I think there is no question he has some offensive advantages to where he was in his last 2 seasons as the Texans starter.

will tamp down alot of success. Which is why i thought the NFC South was ripe for the picking. The Steelers will be back, the Ravens will be good every year, and the Bengals seem to be here to stay as long as Burrow is there. I don't know about that move from a winning standpoint. But from a money standpoint it makes total sense.

I do believe he can make the Browns a better team, but right now the division goes through Cincinnati!

Browns won a playoff game year before last. Baker was injured last year and tried to tough it out and didn’t help anyone I doing so. Browns still have a talented roster - albeit a receiving corp in transition.
Cincy is good but I’m with the many talking heads who think they will fall back a bit - that everything went right for them in playoffs.
AFC North will be like the AFC West - a lot of inter division battles with teams beating each other up.
Will DW4 elevate the Browns to make the playoffs again this season? If he plays a full season, yes. But I don’t think he plays a full season.
Will the Browns go far if no suspension? Unless they have the same luck Cincy had last year, no. But in time one would assume Cleveland will finally make a Super Bowl with DW4.

the Browns will find a way to never make the Super Bowl. DW4 chose poorly. Should have gone the a NFC South team.

Well, he at least has something resembling an O-line in Cleveland. Thats a start. If he doesnt have to run for his life every play it will be a major improvement from his Houston experience.

Cleveland is a much better team than Houston. They have a strong O-line, great running game, and a really good pass rush. Deshaun immediately makes them super bowl contenders.
The browns worst position the last couple of years was QB. With Deshaun they fix that problem. Add a bit more speed in the secondary through the draft and maybe one more reciever and the Browns are ready to roll.

Since looking at a 6-8 games suspension, not this year. The Browns have a much better team than where and when he last played, Texas. The Browns will have to use FA and their mid level draft picks in the future to compensate for losing their top picks over the next 3 years. Once on the field, the Division will be wide open with Burrow, Jackson and with the Steelers never being an easy out. At least the Browns will have a QB that will not cost them games.

giving up that many high draft picks and paying him such a huge salary. I don't think there's much precedent for this type of trade. Generally when a team pays multiple 1st round picks for a QB it's for the draft rights and then they get a ~21 year old rookie that's on his rookie deal for 3-4 years. That guy learns and takes his lumps while the team is short on draft capital, and then, ideally, when he's ready to go in year ~3 they have their draft picks back to build around him.
With the Watson deal, Cleveland is giving up a ton of picks to trade for a QB that will be 27 by the start of the season and may be 28 before he gets to play a full year. Cleveland has a decent roster, but i don't think they were an elite QB away from winning a SB. And now they have very limited draft capital to build around him for the next 3 years, and he's also on a mega contract that will limit the money available for free agent signings.
It will be interesting to see how it works out. Watson may be 30 before Cleveland can really put anything together around him.

Brady is a rarity for playing late. He's basically a one-of-a-kind athlete in every way. There is no reason to think Deshaun can be like Brady in any way (especially since he's had some bad injuries in his career), despite his talent.

Hate to say it but….hellis no. He choose money over success. Kinda disappointed, I thought he would have been smarter. Maybe he’s thinking he can just coast for 5 years and then get serious and go win a SB like OBJ

The Deshaun I know is not the "coasting" type. He has overcome some tough odds in his life and has had success at every level. He took an up-and-coming Clemson team, that no one outside of Clemson thought could hang with Bama, and gave them all they could handle and more.
He did take money over the easy road, but I guarantee he is 100% confident that he can win a Super Bowl in Cleveland. If he doesn't, he still walks away with generational life-altering money (assuming he is smart with the money he makes).
Whether he can elevate the browns or not remains to be seen. I would not bet against DW4. He does have some real weapons and we all know what he did with very little (besides Nuk) in Houston.
I do think he has a good chance to elevate the browns. Not sure it will happen in season 1 with a likely pending suspension looming, but here's some positives that imo have him in a position to elevate the team:
1. Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt will take a lot of pressure off the passing game. 2. The OL is much better than he had in Houston, and top 5-10 in the NFL. 3. Amari Cooper is a solid #1 if he can stay healthy, and Peoples-Jones is a decent receiver as well. After what he did elevating the TEs in Houston, I could see Njoku become a top TE with DW4 throwing his way. 4. The defense has some talent, particularly up front. They need some help on the back end, but Deshaun is no stranger to winning shootouts.

The team was already close to a QB away from winning it all. Of course he will get them there. They may win it all. They will be a top 5 team in the NFL.

Yes the Browns. They are known to have one of the most complete rosters in the NFL. That's part of the reason the team soured on Mayfield. The Browns have been stacked for 2 years and Mayfield just sucked. If you follow the NFL closely it is widely known. I am a Raiders fan and no Browns fan, but the Browns are stacked with talent. If Deshaun can start all season for them, there is not even a slim chance of them not making the playoffs.

Why not. He's a winner at heart.
"Let's go be legendary."
I'm still a little sore with how it went down with James Davis there, and what happened to a promising NFL career in the process, but DW4 is just a guy you want to, um, pull for, and he's no quitter.
Sure he can.

I expect they hope to recoup some of their losses when they trade Baker Mayfield. It’ll be interesting to see if they seek draft picks or go for immediate help.
As others have said, that division is absolutely brutal. It will be tough under the best circumstances.

Fully agree. Mayfield trade will earn them at least one first round pick, and possibly a player. There are a lot of teams scrambling to find a QB. The final cost of Watson may end up being two round 1 and round 2 picks. Not bad at all.

Please tell me who is in such dire straits for a QB that they will give up a 1st rounder for Baker Mayfield? Seattle, maybe? If Houston wanted him, they could have got him in the Deshaun trade. Can't think of any other team where Baker would be a significant upgrade over the status quo.
