6'6" 206 lb DE Desmond Evans from Sanford, NC / 2020 recruit
Feb 8, 2019, 10:25 PM
|
|
Young man attends Lee County HS about 30 miles SW of Raleigh. Clemson has offered him so BV must see a path for Evans at Clemson. My question for those NC alums who have seen him play is, as 2020 ESPN rated #2 recruit with reported 5.08 speed, what position does Evans slot into at Clemson? CW42 played DE at 306 lbs.
Young man is clearly talented - where would he play before he packs on weight? As ESPN 2020 #2 rated recruit, redshirting would seem improbable. All that said, despite being offered, and stating to Rivals he wants to visit Clemson again, I don't see him on Clemson recruiting board. Seems to be leaning to UNC and NCSU but open to out of state. Any local intel out there?

I know that at one point, he stated that we were his leader but I haven't heard much about him since then. I'm guessing that at this point, he is off the board as we are recruiting 5 star defensive ends Jordan Burch and Bryan Bresee extremely hard right now.

5.08 40 time?...
I would think someone @ 6'6 206 lbs should run at least a 4.5 or better....

Should run a 4.5? That’s blazing fast my friend. We may have 5-6 players on our team that will run a legit laser timed 4.5 second forty or less. There’s not many 6ft6 folks in particular running that anywhere.

Dexter Lawrence is 6'-4" 340lbs and just ran a 5.05 40. Clowney was 6'5", 260 lbs and ran a 4.5. So that 5.08 40 time seems pretty slow. An elite athlete at 6'-6" 206 should be in the 4.5 - 4.7 range.

Yes there are a few examples of incredible athletes at that size that do run that. Montez sweat ran a 4.4 at 6ft5, Brian Burns and R Gary also ran a little over 4.5. Clowney/D Lawrence are both incredible athletes as well. But the thing they all had 3 and 4 years of top notch training as well as time for their bodies to mature to go along with their natural genetic gifts.
This Evans kid is what 16 years old and still in high school. I would bet he is slightly faster than a 5.05/40 right now but after a college program is done with him, I am sure he will improve that time dramatically. In the end there are still very few 6ft 6 people running a laser 4.50/40, that’s part of the reason why the NFL covets them so much.

206 lbs and the #2 player in the country should be 4.5 time easy I'd say. As for Clemson players that run 4.5 or faster at over 205? Higgens, Ross, ETN, Feaster, Simmons, Choice, Muse, NGata, Muse, that's just off the top of my head. 205 lbs and running a 4.5 isn't something crazy. Dex was almost double that and almost hit in the 4s, Quennin Williams is 300 lbs ran a 4.8, he would be out of the top 20 DL at the combine and the smallest weight wise by far..... No 5.08 isn't impressive at all for #2 overall and 206lbs 6 6 or not.

6'6 205 is literally wide receiver size. The only way I see him being highly dated is if hes Blazing fast. Already being slow how do yoh think he would Play adding 50-60 lbs on his frame? He should At least have been clocked at a 4.6 at that size maybe faster. Plus many players on our team could run low 4.5's. I bet Xavier Thomas could and he's 265

He’s over 240lbs not 206 and nowhere I can see has him at a verified 40 over 5 seconds. He is most likely a 4.8/4.9.
Out of the entire 2019 nfl combine you have 1 DL player under 4.50/40 dash, Montez Sweat who beat the record set by another all time freak athlete in Clowney. So as for Evans not running a 4.5 or better currently is not a knock on him as if he did he would be in rare rare company.

Rashard Gary ran a 4.57 and 290 lbs and at 6ft 5. ANything close to 5 as a DE is awful.

I wouldn’t say we’re not interested, as we have offered, but he’s likely not a take at the moment. We would take Bresee/Burch/Murphy before we even thought about Evans. Numbers are tight, and we can only take so many lineman, unfortunately, in a loaded class. Evans will be a good pickup for UNC probably, even though his lofty 5-star/Top 30 rating is a little high right now, at least imo. If we take a WDE/Edge rusher, I would imagine we would test the waters with Sav’ell Smalls first, who plays a hybrid OLB/DE role, but I don’t think that’s really the plan right now.

I was wondering the same thing. Last summer I heard a lot about him and we were in his top 5. Now it looks like it’s between UNC and the coots. Rivals has him rated at #2 WDE and #38 overall. 247 (not composite) has him as #2 DE (behind Burch, with Bresee listed as a DT) and #16 overall. If we get Burch and Bresee and both play DE, I could see us not taking Evans. If Bresee plays DT, then I think Burch and Evans at DE would be ideal. I don’t see us getting Murphy. Sure would like Evans to remain in the mix. And I want Tim Smith too.
I wish we could take them all so no one else will get them??

Now 238 is more like it and adding 20-25 pounds to that should be easier. Then he is almost the same size as Cle!

Wouldn’t pay much attention to 40 times listed on recruiting pages. Never know what the circumstances were, if it’s even legit, when it was, etc. He’d be a pure DE if we took him but that’s a really big IF right now. As other posters above have mentioned, Breese and Burch are the top of our board and we’re in prime position to land both, already have 2 DT’s. Based on his athleticism I don’t think Breese will move inside but it’s possible. The next DE/oversign candidate would be Savell Smalls as I believe they’re projecting him as a smaller DE a la Vic Beasley/XT.
Evans will be good but I don’t think he’s a 5* caliber player, and appears to be a situation where we’re going to recruit over him and Dabo will probably try to steer him to Mack in Chapel Hill.

Sure they didn't mistake him for the DE out of Bamberg we got a few years ago that was super fast, but couldn't add any weight and transferred? At 206 pounds that is a project not a soon to be ready for prime time player.

Maybe that experience plays a factor but I’d doubt it.

UNC is going to land I would say because he's also a basketball player, and a good one from what I hear.

Anyone from Lee County probably couldn’t pass an entrance exam to Clemson. UNC on the other hand....

Rivals has him 6 ft 6 inches, 240 lbs and projected to the coots, while 247 has him weighing 238 pounds and a NCSU/UNC battle. ESPN is obviously in the hubba hideout with their 206 pounds and 5.08 - 5.41 forty time, no other service list a forty time. Strange for the services to rank him so high and not list his forty time. To me the 40 time for a DE is one of the first things I notice.
