In 1881 the United States Government appropriated money for the support of an experimental station in every state. But South Carolina had been the pioneer! One hundred acres near the present university were secured for were secured for the Federally-supported station, and its trustees agreed that the three South Carolina stations then in existence should all be under one management.
The Pendleton Farmers' Society immediately asked for a station in their section. Their club had always been active and and helpful, and had been trying to establish agricultural education for many years. Such men as John C. Calhoun and his son-in-law, Thamas Green Clemson, were members of the society. Very soon the Pendleton group was to be rewarded with something far greater than an experiment station.
Mr. Clemson died in 1888 and left 600 acres of his farm, which had once been the home of John C. Calhoun, for a State agricultural college. Five years later Clemson College was opened. In 1912 it entered into an agreement with the United States Department of Agriculture, the first college in the country to take this step. The agreement was that Clemson College, with the aid of the Federal Government, should supervise all farm demonstration work in the State. Two years later county farm agents were sponsored by the Federal Government; in another two years home demonstration agents began their work among farm women. The influence of Clemson's 600 acres of experimental farms has now spread over all of South Carolina!
