It is college basketball season and his name is in the news because A girl ---->
Iowa's Caitlin Clark just broke the NCAA women's hoops scoring record. My hat is off to her, great accomplishment, incredible!
That is impressive, and Pete's name is in the article as she has a chance ? to maybe break his Men's record.
I am going to call "foul" on that.
--- Men play with a larger ball which is more difficult to get through the hoop.
--- Pete played when players were limited to 3 years, she has had 4 so far.
--- There was no 3 point shot when Pete played, no shot clock.
--- Pete had 3,667 points and an average of 44.2 points per game.
--- Maravich was considered to be one of the greatest creative offensive talents ever and one of the best ball handlers of all time.
His father coached at Clemson 1956–1962.

My dad kept telling us kids how great it was we got to see Pete play.
I think the next day we saw a Flames game there since we were visiting Atlanta for the weekend. I could not understand what the big deal was with "Underground Atlanta."

I go to the Masquerade quite often for metal shows. I park at the garage right at the entrance. I have never felt uncomfortable. They have cleaned a lot of it up and there is a decent amount of security there.

I saw him play against Clemson in Littlejohn. We’held’ him to 38 points. He put on a show before the game during warmups of dribbling and shooting I’ll never forget. Tried a shot from mid court. SWISH. Tried two from mid court sideline. Made one of two. Side note, our freshmen played Gardner Webb in the preliminary game. They had an unknown 7’3” center named Artis Gilmore. Remember him?

I remember Artis Gilmore. Went on to play for Jacksonville. They finished second to UCLA in 1970 I think it was.

Thanks for bringing up the memories. I had almost forgotten about going there in early 70s (or late 60s) with the family on our yearly vacation to see the Braves , Six Flags, and Stone Mountain. All I can remember about UA is a pizza place and I believe a wax museum. Could be remembering wrong - over 50 years ago - yikes!

He was coached by his Pop. In the day no one could handle the ball and charge the basset like he could. I suspect his percentage was high, he also led most games in assists, was not a ball hog.

Good stat comparison. An LSU coach charted Pete’s shots at LSU. Had there been a 3 point line he would averaged 57 points per game. He would’ve at least scored 4731 points. And if he could have played varsity his freshman year he probably would’ve topped 6,000 total points!! You could also argue he would scored even more with a three point line because he would’ve consciously known to take 3 point shots. It’s not crazy to hypothesize Pete would’ve scored in the 6,500 point range all things even.

He did. His dad designed the entire game around force feeding him the ball even at the detriment of the team's success. He never played an NCAA tournament game and in his first two years LSU was an outright bad basketball team.

in 1970 at Alexander Memorial Coliseum with the Atlanta Hawks. Early in his first NBA season and still getting used to the pro game, but a showman nonetheless. Teammates were Walt Bellamy, Lou Hudson, and Walt Hazard and Richie Guerin was the player/coach, I believe. A different era back then.

Pete had an older brother named Ronnie, who was a very good player as wall. As best I recall, Ronnie played at Western Carolina but didn’t finish school there. Ronnie later opened a bar in New Orleans. I never knew Ronnie, but I got to know Pete well. We worked together at several basketball camps one summer and became pretty good friends during that period of time.

His former assistant coach, Dale Brown, went back through the old shot charts and and determined he’d average about 57 per game. It would be a more interesting debate if Clark took nearly 40 shots per game like pete did, also if someone like Lebron or Kobe played 3 years of college ball like he did. Both took their teams to NBA finals appearances by the age of 20. Apples to oranges debate, too many outside factors. Women’s basketball is beautiful to watch, the great John Wooden said it’s basketball at its most pure form and was his favorite to watch, due to the fundamentals and execution. One this that isn’t debatable is that Clark is the best shooter in college basketball today, men’s or women’s.

I have mentioned this before but my brother attended Clemson during Coach Maravich's years. Pistol Pete was just a kid then, maybe 12 years old, but every time you saw him, he was dribbling a basketball around campus and downtown. No wonder he could handle a ball so well. Constant practice.

Great point, Tugaloo. Pete was an unbelievable talent, and too bad he didn’t come to Clemson.
I once went to a talk by John Wooden who praised Pete’s skill, but Wooden pointed out that no team has ever won a national championship that also had the nation’s leading scorer. Wooden valued teamwork more. That was in 1978. Not sure if that statement still holds.

Wooden and Press Maravich were good friends, which is interesting since Wooden never used profanity, and Press was just the opposite. Wooden was at one of the camps where I worked.

Kinda a funny Wooden quote considering it wasn't "teamwork" that kept Kareem from leading the nation in scoring - it was beating the crap out of everyone so badly he didn't need to play 35+ night in and night out. Kareem could have scored 50 a night and UCLA still would have walked to those 3 championships.

Looking at stats from Kareem’s (aka Lew Alcindor back then) senior season when the Bruins went 29-1 and won the national championship, no doubt he led the team in scoring with double the points over the next leading scorer. But he only averaged 24 ppg while the team averaged 84 ppg.
Only 3 players averaged in double figures on that team. While no doubt Kareem could have scored more, I think the stats bear out Wooden’s comment that national champions seldom have the leading scorer in the country. He was a special talent for sure, but Wooden won 10 national championships and never had the leading scorer.
BTW, in that same talk, Wooden said his policy was to never visit a player in his home. But he admitted he made an exception with Alcindor. He smiled as he said that. So no doubt he was a special player.

In Kareem's freshman year he was second in the nation in scoring. He absolutely would have led the nation if he played nearly 40 minutes a night like Jimmy Walker.

I don’t disagree with your point. Tigerfan. Kareem was definitely a scoring machine everywhere he played. He probably could have led the nation in scoring more than once if Wooden had wanted it.
I think Wooden’s larger, unstated point was that a team cannot ride one horse to the national title. You have to have a great cast to do that. Pete Maravich didn’t always have that but you can bet UCLA did. I remember watching all those Bruin teams whenever we could get them. They were unbelievably good from top to bottom.

He was about 5'9" in the eighth grade and I could almost keep up with him. He hit a growth spurt over the summer and was about 6'2" as a freshman at Daniel. I wasn't close anymore.
He used to practice the "showtime" passes in the gym aiming at a particular brick and being upset if he didn't hit the right brick.
Someone did a review of his college games and said if the 3 pointer was in effect he would have averaged over 50 per game.

An LSU coach charted his shots over the 3 seasons and said if the 3 point line had been in play Pete would’ve averaged 57 per game. 57 per game X 83 games = 4,731 points in 3 years!! Freshmen were not allowed to play varsity back then. If he had played 4 years varsity with a 3 point line it’s likely he would’ve scored over 6,000 points!!! Puts the all time scoring crown in a different light.

A lot of those points also apply to any men’s college basketball player who might break his record today. And I agree. Really wonder how some of those guys who played years ago would fare with today’s shot clocks, 3 point shots, and playing 5-7 or maybe even more years.

We were neighbors on Highland Dr. in Clemaon. I was at DW Daniel HS and graduated in 1962, and Pete was a sophomore or a freshman then. I saw him grow into a BBall players, as he carried a ball with him everywhere he went and adored his Dad the coach. Actually his older brother was taller and stronger, but he rebelled against his Daded, and joined the Marines right after HS. He excelled as a Marine and became a highly rank SGT, about as high an NCO as one could becaome. And he supported Pete's Carerr. When I was at DAniel, we had a very talented 6 ft. 5 guard named Jim Sutherland, who excelled at Clemson along with Randy Mahaffy Randy became an ABA star, while Jim turned down the Pros and became a distinguished MD instead. Pete was late in his growth and looked like a mutt next to Sutherland, as he was only a soph. or freshman when Jim was a senior. However, he did shoot alot at that age. His Dad got a big pay raise to go NC State, then a bigger pay raise to go to LSU as they both wanted Pete to play for them.y
Of course Pete made LSU a hot spot for Basketball, and then played pro there. And if you want to see one of the greatest individual games ever. look up on YouTube when New Orleans (or was he playing for Atlanta then?). Anyway, Pete scored 66 points against NY Knicks who had the best defensive team in the NBA. They had Walt Frazier, Willis Reed, Bill Bradley, etc. He would have scored a bit more if 3 pt. was allowed. Late in his career, when his physical ability was diminished, Red Aurbach hired him, calling him the best ball handler he had ever seen. One can see his amazing ball handling in that Knicks game which is easily found on YouTube. I watch it occasionally just to remind myself that Passionate Will has so much to do with one's success in life. Pete died coaching on a Court at a Christain School. At his autopsy, it was found he a a congenital heart problem that is usually fatal by the time one is a young adult. What an inspiration Pete's life is...

Saw his last high school game in state championship in Greensboro NC. They played the 5A championship game the day of the ACC Championship that night. Double OT I think he took every shot in the OTs.

Childhood idol for sure. I tried copy the bank shots I read about him making at the YMCA gym on campus. Was sort of crushed when he had an off night on his return to Littlejohn but he still flashed the ball handling and no look passes unlike anyone. Saw him again at Alexander Memorial in ATL when he first started with the Hawks and he had all the moves. Great player and great memories. Of course if the 3 point shot were in effect he would have averaged well over 50 per game at LSU.

I saw Pete play in Clemson my freshman year, 1968. He was an amazing ball handler.
