The Deshaun Watson of Baseball
It has been suggested by some before this weekend, but get ready for the comparisons to begin. Some are calling Clemson right fielder Seth Beer, the Deshaun Watson of baseball. After the first 19 games of his career, it seems like a fair comparison.

Beer is hitting .453 with nine home runs and 25 RBIs. But his flair for the dramatics is driving more of the conversation.

In his first ACC series, Beer hit four homers in a three-game set at Wake Forest. This was after he hit a game-tying double in the bottom of the ninth inning in a mid-week game against Winthrop. That blast helped the Tigers to a dramatic walk-off win against the Eagles,

On Friday, he hit a 450-foot bomb over the Cajun Cafe off of one of the best pitchers in the ACC. But Sunday he took the legacy to a new level. Clemson trailed late before rallying to put the game in extra innings. That set the scene for Beer. I was standing with a friend right before the final pitch of the game, and I told him, "Well this would be one thing he hasn't done yet." The one thing I was talking about was a walk-off home run. Ten seconds later Beer's blast was damaging a heater that was in the Cajun Cafe. What ensued was a celebration many of us won't forget for a long time. Beer was mugged (no pun intended) by his teammates as this team celebrated a sweep, a seven-game winning streak, a 16-3 overall record and a 5-1 start in the ACC.

After the game, the 19-year old sounded like a ten-year Major League Baseball veteran. He was humble and deflected the attention to his teammates, who he referred to as his brothers.

This team feels different. This program feels different. Monte Lee says his team is relaxed, and there is probably no better example of that than what we see in Beer. No moment has been too big. Didn't we say that about Deshaun Watson?

When Watson beat UNC and NC State with deep balls in his freshman season, defenses adjusted by playing softer, two deep coverage. He then beat them with the underneath passing game and became a 1,000-yard rusher. When Alabama took away the running game, Watson passed for over 400 yards.

Now Beer will face the same adjustments. Teams will be even more careful with him. He will see fewer and fewer good pitches. Now we will see if Beer can adjust to their adjustments. My guess is he will. My guess is we have the Deshaun Watson of baseball.
