Mickey,
You probably have answered this before, Mickey, but please do so again.

Please tell me the perks/advantages that one has by accepting a preferred walk-on position with our football program.

Are  there any disadvantages to being a preferred walk-on other than not going elsewhere where a scholarship is available?

Is there a number limit to how many"preferred walk-on we can have?

How about regular walk-ons?  Any perks? Any restricted numbers? Any advantages, disadvantages?

Thank you for your time, Mickey.

Lee

Lee,
Football programs are limited to 85 scholarships and 115 overall players including walk-ons. A preferred walk-on is guaranteed a spot on the team. He is also a guy that might be close to the front of the line when the 85 number falls short and the head coach decides to reward a walk-on with a scholarship. The advantage of being a preferred walk-on compared to going to another school that offered is usually a chance to play in a bigger program. Hope this helps.

Hello Mickey,
I attended the spring game and we do have some great play makers and of course I knew that before the game. One thing I didn't see was a kicker who can get kickoffs into or really near the end zone. The closest I recall seeing one that came close to the end zone was from the left footed kicker who I believe is a walk-on or a true freshman. Your thought on this or have we just not seen the kickers show off their distance?

Thanks,
David

David,

I think its great that the biggest glaring weakness in the spring game was the kick-off guy. That is probably how it feels at powers like Alabama and Ohio State. But yes, it was a weakness. They will miss Bradley PinionBradley Pinion

who left unexpectedly. They were not prepared for his out of the blue decision.

Mickey,

What is going on with women's golf?  I know it's a new sport,  but I can't believe the drop off this year.  The team's best finish this year is 10th.

Lucky

Lucky,

First, I love the name. Second, the women's golf team has a couple of issues. They are only in their second year of existence. Last year started with a bang because they had one of the world's top amateurs who played well in the fall. She didn't play well in the spring and it hurt. She then turned pro after only one season. Other players on this year's team have not lived up to expectations and injuries have been a factor. They have very little depth. Next season they get Lauren Stephenson in. She is one of the top amateurs in the country and will make an immediate impact. I believe in JT Horton and the program he is building. Unfortunately, it may take a little longer than we thought last fall.
