FLORIDA NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL POLL
TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Florida has been ranked No. 1 for the second straight week in "Collegiate Baseball" newspaper's NCAA Division I baseball poll. The Gators (7-0) are off to their best start since the 2002 squad started 11-0. During the past week, Florida beat Florida Atlantic, 13-2 and then swept a 3-game series against Boston College (4-0, 9-3, 7-2). The Gators have used 13 different pitchers through seven games, and the staff has a combined ERA of 1.43 with 65 strikeouts in 63 innings and just five walks. Florida is hitting .352 and fielding .993 with only two errors all season. Poll Notes: Outside of Florida, there are eight other undefeated teams across the nation which are ranked in the top 30, including Oklahoma (9-0), Florida St. (7-0), South Carolina (6-0), Louisiana St. (7-0), Wichita St. (7-0), Arkansas (6-0), Fresno St. (6-0) and U.C. Irvine (7-0). In key series over the past weekend, UCLA lost two of three at home to San Jose St., Cal. St. Fullerton beat Texas Christian two of three, Vanderbilt beat Stanford two of three, and Fresno St. swept a 3-game series against Pepperdine. Four teams fell out of the top 30 this week in Coastal Carolina (1-3 last week), Connecticut (1-2), St. John's (1-2) and Hawaii (1-3). The "Collegiate Baseball" newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season. Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's Baseball America DURHAM, N.C.—Another impressive week by Florida, led by its dominant pitching staff, kept the Gators No. 1 in the Baseball America Top 25 for the third week in a row. UCLA and Texas Christian, two top-five teams, lost home series, giving the top of the rankings a new look. Vanderbilt moved up to No. 2 after beating then-No. 8 Stanford in a home series. Oklahoma and South Carolina used home sweeps to move up to No. 3 and No. 4. UCLA fell to No. 5 after being upset by San Jose State. Cal State Fullerton is the only new entry to the top 10 this week after topping then-No. 4 TCU on the road. The Titans jump five spots to No. 7. California’s trip across the country to Myrtle Beach, S.C., proved fruitful. The Bears won three games against 2010 NCAA tournament teams and moved up three spots to No. 14. While Fullerton and Cal were the week’s biggest winners, Connecticut again suffered a precipitous fall after a 1-2 weekend. The Huskies dropped eight spots to No. 22 after losses to Oregon State and Indiana in Corpus Christi, Texas. Two new teams enter the rankings this week. Fresno State and UC Irvine each used 4-0 weeks to move into the Top 25. The Bulldogs swept a weekend series against Pepperdine and the Anteaters blew away the field at the MLB Urban Invitational. The Pac-10 continues to lead all conferences with six teams in the Top 25. The staff of Baseball America determines the Top 25 rankings. Records indicated are through games of February 28 and do not include ties. Dropped Out: St. John’s (23), Miami (25).
