Clemson Student-Athletes Establish Records in Classroom

Clemson, SC – Clemson student-athletes established a record for the number of Dean’s List students in a semester according to a report released Thursday by Clemson’s Office of Institutional Research.

One-hundred and thirty Clemson student-athletes recorded a GPA of at least 3.50 to earn selection to the Dean’s List, breaking the semester record of 123 set in the spring of 2006. Forty-nine of those Dean’s List students had a perfect 4.0, the second highest semester total on record. Overall, 224 of the 480 student-athletes were named to the academic honor roll.

The overall GPA for Clemson student-athletes was 2.89, tied for the third best semester on record and the best fall performance in history

“We continue to see strong, consistent results from our athletic programs academically,” said Athletic Director Dr. Terry Don Phillips. “This is a testimony to the excellent work by our staff at Vickery Hall under the direction of Becky Bowman. I also applaud our coaching staffs for making academics a priority.”

The Clemson baseball program had its highest semester GPA and most student-athletes named to the academic honor roll on record, while the women’s track program had its highest team GPA in history. The men’s track program tied its all-time record.

Six Clemson programs posted a team GPA of 3.0 or better. The list included the baseball (3.07), women’s soccer (3.30), men’s swimming (3.10), women’s swimming (3.34), women’s track (3.26) and rowing (3.21) all exceeded the 3.0 mark.

Jack Leggett’s baseball team had 24 of its 33 student-athletes on the honor roll, a 72.7 percent figure. That ranked second among Clemson’s 15 programs, as only the women’s swimming team with a 73 percent mark was better. The list of academic honor roll selections on the baseball team included starting pitchers Ryan Hinson and Graham Stoneburner, and shortstop Stan Widmann. Widmann earned a 4.0 for the semester and received his undergraduate degree in December.

The Clemson football team had a 2.41 GPA for the semester, the third best fall semester on record for the Tigers football program. Twenty-nine team members made the academic honor roll, including first-team All-ACC running back C.J. Spiller, who made the Dean’s List. Spiller is the first Clemson football player to make the Dean’s List and first-team All-ACC in the same semester since Kyle Young accomplished the feat in the fall of 2000. First-team Freshman All-American Brandon Maye also made the Dean’s List, while All-ACC center Thomas Austin made the academic honor roll. Twin brothers Brandon and Byron Clear both made the Dean’s List.

The Clemson men’s basketball team had a 2.52 GPA, the second best fall semester on record for that program. The national ranked team had four student-athletes on the academic honor roll, including sharp-shooting guard Terrence Oglesby and reserve freshman forward Tanner Smith.

The women’s swimming program had the top team GPA with a 3.34. It was the 16th straight semester that the women’s swimming program had at least a 3.20 team GPA. The list of academic honor roll selections from that team included five-time ACC Champion Michelle Parkhurst, who had a perfect 4.0 in the classroom. The men’s program also had over a 3.0 with a 3.10, giving Chris IP two programs over the 3.0 mark in the fall of 2008.

Both track programs also did well in coach Lawrence Johnson’s first semester as head coach. The men’s program tied its semester record with a 2.83 team GPA and had 19 student-athletes on the academic honor roll, the highest total in 10 semesters.

The women’s track program had a 3.26 team GPA, shattering the previous record of 3.10 set in the spring of 2007. Twenty-Seven Clemson women’s track athletes made the academic honor roll, the second highest total in history. That list included Patricia Mamona, a six-time All-ACC selection, who made the Dean’s List.

The rowing program had a 3.21 team GPA, the 21st consecutive semester that program has had a 3.0 or better. Forty-five of the 70 student-athletes made he academic honor roll, including All-American Jessica Leidecker.

The women’s soccer program had a 3.30 team GPA, the eighth straight semester that program has been over 3.30. The list of academic honor roll student-athletes included two-time All-ACC selection Julie Bolt. The men’s soccer program had a solid semester with a 2.95 and had 13 student-athletes on the academic honor roll, including all-region goal keeper Joseph Bendik. The men’s tennis team had a 2.97 GPA under first year coach Chuck McCuen, and had a pair of student-athletes on the Dean’s List.
