No Surprise: Spence Staying At Clemson

by -

ATLANTA - As expected, Clemson offensive coordinator Rob Spence told reporters Saturday that he was remaining in that capacity with the Tigers.

Spence said that he spoke with head coach Tommy Bowden at length after interviewing in Knoxville. Ultimately he decided to withdraw his name from consideration.

"I was never offered the position. I never anticipated I would be," Spence said. "They were going through a process. They were going to finish their process much later, and I felt it wouldn't be fair to our program and my players here to let that continue."

Later, Bowden issued a statement through the university, expressing his happiness with Spence's decision.

"I am very pleased that Rob Spence announced today that he is staying at Clemson as our offensive coordinator. It is a compliment to Rob that many outstanding programs have shown an interest in him over the last three seasons (at Clemson). It is also a compliment to Clemson that he wants to remain with the program. We have the program headed in the right direction on many fronts and he wants to be a part of it.

"Rob has done an outstanding job with our offense over the last three years. We have ranked first or second in most offensive areas during that time and he has done it with three different starting quarterbacks."

Clemson wrapped up practice for the Chick-Fil-A Bowl Saturday afternoon at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.

Kickoff for the game vs. Auburn is set for 7:30 p.m. Monday.
