Tigers Pound Gamecocks, 82-63

CLEMSON - In Oliver Purnell's mind his early-season schedule is set up to get increasingly more difficult as the games progress. If so, Clemson has passed its most stringent test to date.

The Tigers outscored visiting South Carolina 24-7 in an eight minute period in the second half and rolled to an 82-63 victory over the Gamecocks. The game was played before an announced crowd of 8400 at Littlejohn Coliseum.

The victory improves Clemson to 6-0 on the season, while the Gamecocks fall to 5-2.

It's also the first time Clemson has scored more than 63 points against a Dave Odom-coached team in its last 10 attempts. But as has been the case through the first month-plus of the season, the Tigers' explosive offense was made possible by continuing to be strong in two other areas - defense and rebounding.

Clemson held USC to 49 percent shooting overall, 41.7 percent (10-of-24) in the second half. The Tigers scored 26 points off 20 Gamecock turnovers, and got another 26 second half points thanks to a 26-8 advantage on the offensive boards.

Purnell's team finished the afternoon with a 47-34 total rebounding margin.

The teams found themselves tied 47-47 after USC's Tarence Kinsey scored on a layup at 16:48 after a steal by Renaldo Balkman. But that would be the last bit of positive news for the Gamecocks.

Clemson, which had lead virtually the entire first half, regained control with a 13-2 run following the Kinsey basket. James Mays had six of his game-high 19 points during the run, getting two baskets following up misses by his teammates.

Mays also had seven rebounds on the afternoon, good enough for second on the team behind Sam Perry's eight, and even had a pair of assists.

Vernon Hamilton followed Mays with 16 points - 14 in the first half - while Shawan Robinson added 12.

Balkman had 15 to lead USC, while Tre Kelly and Rocky Trice added 12 each.

Clemson return to action on Tuesday, when it will host Wofford College.
