Two Days In, Let the Hitting Begin

CLEMSON - The NCAA allows 10 days of full pad work among the 15 allotted

spring practice workouts, and Clemson head coach Tommy Bowden figures why

wait?

After two days in shorts, the Tigers will begin full contact work Wednesday,

a day which will signal a beginning to the establishment of a pecking order

at each position.

"We'll start to find out who needs to get the ball at tailback, who gets the

ball at wide receiver...," Bowden said. "Obviously we've got a lot of

questions inside at center and guard, and the defense has a lot of question

marks. I think (defensive coordinator) John Lovett pretty much opened up all

11 positions (because) he doesn't know any of those guys.

"But I'm sure some of them will establish their domain pretty quickly

starting (Wednesday). But it still has to be established."

Bowden said the team will hit for most, if not all, of Wednesday's workout.

"We don't want to kill them before (Saturday's) scrimmage, but we'll hit a

good bit," he said. "A lot of it will be close-quarter drills, one-on-one,

some inside (work) and all that. But there will be a good bit of it."

NOTES

- Wide receiver Airese Currie missed Tuesday's practice because he was

running track.

"He'll have some flexibility there, just like Roscoe (Crosby) has flexibility

in baseball," Bowden said. "Even Tye Hill and Terrence Huey will have some

flexibility where track is concerned."

Huey, who switched from running back to cornerback last month, will have less

flexibility than the others because he's trying to learn a new position,

Bowden said.

"There are varying degrees of flexibilty," Bowden said. "But if he can give

(Clemson men's track coach Bob Pollard) help winning the outdoor ACC, he'll

certainly get that opportunity."

- Walk-on long snapper Tommy Sharpe is getting early work at center behind

projected starter Cedric Johnson and backup Chip Myrick. Mark Jetton, slated

as the No. 2 left guard behind Jermyn Chester, also spent some time at center

Tuesday and "seemed to have a natural feel for it," Bowden said.

- The team will practice at 3:30 Wednesday. The workout is open to the

public.
