TSL: Tigers Stun Seminoles |
Each week TigerNet will be providing a computer simulation of the upcoming 2001 ACC football season. While the focus will be on Clemson we will be able to predict the winner of the ACC title as well. Enjoy!
CLEMSON -- Most Clemson fans would agree that the result of Saturday’s game was long overdue. Behind a “bend but don’t break” defense and the leg of sophomore kicker Aaron Hunt, the Clemson Tigers scored 19 unanswered points to give them an upset win over Florida State by the score of 26-24. The Seminoles (7-2, 6-1) missed numerous opportunities against the Tigers (8-1, 6-1), turning the ball over three times in Clemson territory. The Clemson victory broke Florida State’s nine game winning streak against the Tigers, and pulled Clemson into a first place tie for the ACC lead with Florida State and Georgia Tech. The Tigers came out in all-orange, a traditionally lucky combination. After winning the coin toss to start the game, Clemson roared from the gates. A 13 yard pass on third and seven at the Seminole 32 yard line from senior quarterback Woody Dantzler to sophomore receiver Kevin Youngblood kept the Tigers opening drive alive. Two plays later, senior running back Travis Zachery powered into the endzone from eight yards out. The Seminoles attempted to answer, as redshirt freshman Chris Rix hooked up with senior receiver Robert Morgan for 39 yards on the first FSU play from scrimmage. Florida State drove to the Clemson 20 yard line before senior Altoy Bodrick stepped in front of Seminole fullback William McCray, intercepting Rix’s pass, and putting an end to the scoring threat. Momentum shifted in the second quarter in favor of Florida State. After a Brett Cimorelli field goal, Clemson attempted a fake punt on fourth down and 2 from the FSU 46 yard line. Seminole sophomore Darnell Dockett picked off the Wayne Kopp pass and raced 53 yards into the endzone for the touchdown. Florida State held the Tigers to three and out following the kickoff, and senior running back Davy Ford ripped off a 58 yard touchdown run on the first play of the possession. The Seminoles held a 17-7 lead, and it appeared that the floodgates had opened. Clemson showed that it wasn’t ready to pack it in yet, as the Tigers went 78 yards in under two minutes. A 22 yard touchdown pass from Dantzler to freshman Roscoe Crosby brought Clemson to within three points of Florida State going into halftime. The second half turned into a defensive struggle. Sophomore Aaron Hunt continued his incredible hot streak, adding four more field goals. Three of these were the result of Seminole turnovers deep within their own territory, courtesy of Charles Hafley, Brian Mance, and Nick Eason. The turnovers kept the Florida State offense from settling into a rhythm, and Clemson capitalized. As Hunt’s fourth kick sailed through the uprights, Clemson found itself with a 26-17 lead and under five minutes left in the game. The Seminoles answered quickly, going 75 yards in two minutes before their drive stalled on the Tiger five yard line. Florida State lined up for a 22 yard field goal that would bring them within six points, and Florida State coach Bobby Bowden reached into his bag of tricks. Holder Anquan Boldin took the snap and found reserve tight end Patrick Hughes in the endzone uncovered for the touchdown. The silence in Death Valley provided evidence that the Clemson faithful still remembered the “puntrooskie” used by the Seminoles in 1989 for the last second win. This time would be different. Clemson went backwards after receiving the kickoff, as their first two plays lost a total of 10 yards. Facing a third down and 20 from the Clemson 10 yard line, Dantzler calmly found Crosby on a crossing pattern at the 18. Crosby broke two tackles and was forced out of bounds after gaining 24 yards and a Clemson first down. From there, Zachery and the Clemson offensive line ran the remaining two minutes off the clock, and Clemson held on for the landmark 26-24 victory. Clemson visits Maryland next week. NOTES: The game was simulated 10 times, with Clemson scoring 288 points to Florida State’s 282. Both teams won 5 games each, making the simulation the closest of the season........Florida State receiver Robert Morgan tore his ACL and was lost for the season three weeks after the completion of this week’s simulations. SIMULATION NOTES
For each Clemson contest the game is simulated 10 times using Madden 2001 for the PC. We then average the scores and pick the one game
that most accurately reflects the average game.
We worked hard to make the simulations are as accurate as possible, but there are some things that
we can't control. Consider the following:
1) Quarterbacks rarely run in the simulations.
2) Based on the info we have, the rosters and depth charts used in these
simulations are OUR interpretations. While other schools have NO true
freshman playing (mainly because we are not as familier with them as
Clemson), Clemson has some, including Roscoe Crosby.
3) NFL stadiums and rules will be used.
4) Players do fatigue, but are seldom replaced. What we try to do with
teams like Wofford is use Zachery for one half, and then use Kelly and
Rambert for a quarter each. However, in a game against, say, FSU,
Zachery might end up with 30+ carries.
5) Teams will use NFL playbooks. We've tried to find NFL playbooks that
most closely mirror college playbooks.
6) Obviously weather can't be predicted. Every game will be played in
fair weather.
7) Injuries can't be predicted. They DO occur in the simulations, and
we keep track of them. If Matt Bailey breaks his arm against FSU in
the simulation we chose to use, he will not appear for the rest of the
year.
8) Simulations are meant for entertainment only!!
