South Ft Myers’s magical dream season finally ended as they were beaten Friday 44-27 to Miami-Norland in the Class 3A state semifinal. South Ft Myers committed four turnovers, and its team gave up a season high in points and total yardage.
Sammy Watkins had 7 catches for 128 yards and no touchdowns. Previously, he had 8 touchdowns in the first three playoff games of the post season, but he still made an impression on the Miami-Norland defensive backs. “That kid – Sammy Watkins is a beast,” Miami-Norland Defensive back Quincy Casimir told the Fort Myers press. Clemson-bound Watkins finished his career as Lee County’s all-time leading receiver with 122 catches for 2,996 yards and 36 touchdowns. Scout.com rates Watkins as the No.2 wide receiver in the country. Watkins joins a Clemson recruiting class that includes Charone Peake, Marlin Lane and Mike Bellamy, along with a signee from last season in Martavis Bryant. Watkins picked the Tigers over Alabama, Florida, Miami, Michigan and North Carolina.
