Offer Nears For Alabama QB
Clemson has already landed one verbal commitment at quarterack from Michael Wade. Clemson will sign one more quarterback in this class, but Brent Schaeffer has everything on hold right now.
Clemson is still willing take Brent Schaeffer, but it appears their patience could be dwindling. Schaeffer is saying the right things to the Clemson coaches, but he is not pulling the trigger. The one player that stands to benefit is Chris Smelley of Alabama.
Smelley is a standout quarterback in his own right. He is one of the top rated prospects in Alabama this year in what is a very good year for the state of Alabama. Clemson is not alone in waiting to offer Smelley. In-state powers Alabama and Auburn have not offered. SEC power LSU and fellow SEC school Ole Miss have offered Smelley. Smelley has five schools in mind.
"Alabama, Auburn, Ole Miss, Clemson, and LSU are my top five. I camped at all of them except LSU. Clemson was close to offering, but they are still evaluating me. It is the same situation with Alabama and Auburn. I feel very comfortable with LSU and Ole Miss, if they do not offer. The camp at Ole Miss went really well."
Clemson could offer Smelley in the next few days. He is being recruited by Dabo Swinney, and Swinney has proved he can go into Alabama and pull out the top players before.
For the record, Smelley is not a fall back option. He is a very talented quarterback, and if Wade had not already committed, he would hold an offer from Clemson presently. He moves well for his size and has a very good arm.
We will keep you updated on this prospect's status as the summer rolls on.
