Smith is a 3-star linebacker by all the major recruiting services. He prefers to play linebacker but on his high school team - he also has played safety, receiver, and tight end.

He has offers from Charlotte, Clemson, Duke, Illinois, Maryland, Old Dominion, Pittsburgh, Toledo, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wisconsin, and others.

As a junior, he had 94 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, and 6 sacks. Clemson offered on 1/13/14 and Brent Venables is one of the coaches that was handling his recruitment.
