View Full Profile had one thing on his mind when he arrived in Fort Myers late Friday afternoon: food.
Fortified by a meal of fried chicken, grilled cheese and french fries at his favorite restaurant, Speedy Two, on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Watkins returned to South Fort Myers High School where he was embraced as a returning hero.
That’s because Watkins isn’t any ordinary freshman.
He’s one of the best college football players in the country, helping lead Clemson University to an 8-1 record and a No. 11 national ranking.
Watkins shook countless hands, posed for pictures with cheerleaders and signed plenty of autographs, some on orange T-shirts emblazoned with the slogan ‘The Deuce is Loose,’ a reference to the No. 2 jersey he wears at Clemson. South athletic director Bill Blakemore also showed him the new banner on display in the school’s gymnasium, commemorating Watkins’ 2010 state championship in the 200-meter run.
