Report: Spiller working out for NFL team on Tuesday

by - Assoc. Editor -

Former Clemson standout and NFL free agent running back C.J. Spiller will work out for the New York Jets on Tuesday according to multiple reports.

The Jets currently have Matt Forte (starter), Bilal Powell (3rd down back), and Troymaine Pope (backup) at the running back position.

Spiller was released by the New Orleans Saints two week ago after just 18 months and 13 appearances in NFL games with the team. The Saints signed him to a four-year, $16 million deal last offseason as a free agent. Since his salary has already been paid for 2016, his next salary this season will more than likely be around the league minimum.

He finished his injury-plagued 2015 NFL season with 36 carries for 112 yards and 34 catches (on 44 targets) for 239 yards and two receiving touchdowns. For his NFL career with the Bills and Saints, Spiller had 704 rushes for 3,433 yards with 12 rushing touchdowns and 4,867 yards from scrimmage and 20 total scores. In 2012, Spiller was named to the Pro Bowl.
