Monday's Clemson Football Practice Report

Clemson, S.C.—It was the last day of two-a-day practices for the Clemson football team. The veterans practiced for 90 minutes in the morning, then the entire team worked for two hours in the evening. The night practice ended a little after 9 pm.

The freshmen had an academic meeting in the morning at Littlejohn Coliseum. But, they were back on the practice fields in the evening.

The morning session concluded with the team’s participation in the Ice Bucket Challenge. The Challenge has been sweeping the country and the Tiger football team and head coach Dabo Swinney joined in on Monday morning. The Ice Bucket Challenge has been done by many teams all over the country and is part of a fund raising initiative to raise money to help in the fight against ALS disease.

“I had over 20 people challenge me to do it and one of the sororities on campus challenged the team,” said Swinney. “This disease is personal for me because one of my college teammates (at Alabama), Kevin Turner, has it. So we were glad to be involved. All of our coaches and all of our seniors took part this morning.”

The Tigers worked in shorts in the morning, but were in full uniform in the afternoon. One of the Tigers who was moving well was wide receiver Charone PeakeCharone Peake

, who is recovering from two knee injuries since last September.

“Charone looked terrific and it was great to see him out there running, cutting and making plays,” said a smiling Swinney. “He makes a huge difference in our offense.”

Monday’s work was a mixture of continuing to work on making his team better and also preparing for Georgia, the Tigers season opener on August 30. “We had two good practices today. It was a mix of working on Clemson and working on Georgia. Tuesday it will be all Georgia. We will get them back physically the rest of the week. We will challenge them mentally from a preparation standpoint.”

Prior to the evening practice, the team watched a presentation by Clemson graduate Richie Parker. Parker is an engineer with Hendricks Motor Sports in Charlotte. He has succeeded in his profession and in all areas of his life despite missing both of his arms.

“What a message, what an inspiration,” said Swinney. “He is a great example of making the best with what God has given you. Many of the players told me he was the best speaker we have ever had.

The Tigers complete preseason camp with a Tuesday afternoon practice. The team will have Wednesday off, the first day of school at Clemson, then hold practices on Thursday and Friday. Monday will be game week for the season opener at Georgia.
