Lawson on Gamecocks: "We got fed up with it"

by - Assoc. Editor -

Former Clemson defensive end Shaq Lawson was on the Paul Finebaum Show on Monday and discussed several topics including the in-state rivalry between Clemson and South Carolina.

"That's something you got to live with every year," Lawson said. "You can beat Florida State but you lose to South Carolina, and you will hear it all year long until that next year. We got fed up with it. I know my class got fed up with it. I know I lost to those guys one time, and that was my freshman year."

"We came in every day, and we had a clock that said 'Beat USC' because they had beat us five times in a row," Lawson said. "We knew it was time to put a stop to it and we had to do that and make a change and change that whole rivalry around."

Lawson knows if the Gamecocks would have pulled off the upset over Clemson then it would have made a great end to their season.

"If South Carolina had beat us this year, we would have had to live with that," Lawson said. "South Carolina would basically have won a national championship after that one game."

Lawson finished the season with 86 tackles, 25.5 tackles for loss (first in the nation), 12.5 sacks and 15 quarterback hurries.
