Huegel named to Groza Award Watch List

Clemson, S.C.—Clemson kicker Greg Huegel has been named to the “Watch List” for the 2016 Lou Groza Award. The Groza Award is presented each year to the outstanding kicker in college football and is named in honor of former Cleveland Browns kicking great Lou Groza.

Huegel is one of 19 FBS kickers on the list, and he is one of just four sophomores. Huegel led the nation in total field goals last year with 27 and he scored 138 points, more among kickers nationally and most in Clemson history.

The native of Blythewood, S.C. was not on the Clemson roster until last August, but went from walk-on to second-team All-American, the first player in Clemson history to make All-America honors while still a walk-on. He was also named a first-team freshman All-American by Sports Illustrated.

During Clemson’s 14-1 season, Huegel missed just one field goal against ACC competition, and that was in the ACC Championship game against North Carolina. He enters the 2016 season with a streak of 14 consecutive games with at least one field goal.

He made 5-7 field goals in the two College Football Playoff games. He finished the year 27-32 on field goals and 57-62 on extra points. At one point in the middle of the season he made 16 consecutive field goals, the second longest streak in Clemson history.
