CLEMSON, S.C. (SID) - Junior righthander Daniel Gossett (Lyman, S.C.) was selected in the second round (No. 65 overall pick) by the Oakland Athletics on Thursday night. Gossett was the first Tiger drafted by the Athletics since 2012 (Phil Pohl).

Gossett, one of 21 semifinalists for the Golden Spikes Award and a First-Team All-ACC starting pitcher, had a 7-2 record, 1.93 ERA, .202 opponents' batting average and 107 strikeouts against only 30 walks in 107.1 innings pitched over 15 starts in 2014. The team co-captain's 107 strikeouts were the most by a Tiger since 1996 (Kris Benson).

in 282.2 innings pitched over 50 appearances (41 starts) in his three years in Tigertown, he has a 23-9 record, two saves, three shutouts and a 2.80 ERA while allowing 218 hits (.211 opponents' batting average) and 107 walks with 285 strikeouts. He is seventh in Tiger history in strikeouts, ninth in innings pitched, tied for ninth in shutouts, 10th in strikeouts per nine innings pitched (9.07), 10th in hits per nine innings pitched (6.94) and tied for 10th in wins.

MLB's draft report on Gossett:

Clemson has produced seven big league pitchers in the past 10 Drafts. If Gossett sneaks into the top three rounds this June, he'll have gotten picked higher than any of them, with the exception of 2007 first-rounder Daniel Moskos. A 16th-round pick by the Red Sox out of a South Carolina high school three years ago, Gossett often works in the low 90s with his fastball and tops out around 94 mph. He does a good job of commanding his heater, which is crucial because it's fairly straight. His best offering is a hard slider, and his changeup gives him a reliable third pitch. Gossett isn't imposing at 6-foot-1 and 175 pounds, so scouts wonder if he'll hold up as a starter in pro ball. He missed a start in early April with shoulder stiffness but came back strong afterward. If he has to move to his bullpen, both his fastball and slider could become plus pitches in shorter stints.
