Clemson wins record third straight golf tournament

Clemson, S.C.—Clemson overcame a three-stroke deficit to third ranked Virginia entering the final round and won the 2017 Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate on Tuesday. It was Clemson’s third consecutive tournament victory, the first time in the 87-year history of the program that the Tigers have won three consecutive tournaments.

Clemson trailed Virginia by three shots heading into the final round, then beat the Cavaliers by four shots on Tuesday. Clemson finished first with a score of five under par 835 over the 54 holes played on Monday and Tuesday. Virginia was second at 836 and South Carolina was third at 845. Augusta finished fourth at 848 and East Carolina as fifth at 857.

The course played more difficult on Tuesday as the average score soared to 75.5 for the 90 golfers in the field.

Bryson Nimmer, Austin Langdale and Carson Young all had rounds of two over par 72 on Tuesday, while Doc Redman had a 73 and William Nottingham had a 74. Clemson shot a team score of 289 for the round, nine-over-par, but it was still four shots better than the Cavaliers, who had beaten Clemson in two tournaments by a combined 38 shots in the fall.

Redman was Clemson’s top golfer for the tournament with a 207 score, and second place finish. He finished three shots behind Virginia’s Derek Bard in the race for medalist honors. Young finished at 208 for a fourth place standing, while Langdale and Nottingham finished tied for ninth at 211.

Bryson Nimmer, Clemson’s best golfer in the team victory in Puerto Rico in February, finished 30th with a 218 score, but he might have had the most clutch performance on Tuesday as he made a birdie on the first hole, his 17th of the day, to provide the margin of victory.

Clemson will go for a fourth straight tournament victory March 24-26 at the Furman Invitational in Greenville, S.C.
