Clemson Women's Track wins ACC Championship

CLEMSON, S.C. — The ACC Indoor Championship returned to Clemson after a one-year hiatus. The women’s track & field team compiled 102 team points to outlast Florida State and Notre Dame to claim the school’s fifth indoor conference crown in the last six seasons. Mimi Land added to her hardware collection as the ACC’s Most Valuable Field Athlete as well.

“We’re used to winning on the women’s side, and I’m glad to see us back to our winning ways,” said coach Mark Elliott. “Across the board, the sprints and jumps posted some big scores. Mimi won the award as the high point scorer, which shows how well her group has done. All the coaches stepped up their units this week. I’m glad for everyone, we did well.”

The Tigers had individual wins in the 60 hurdles in triple jump, and finished the meet in grand style, capturing the 4x400 relay with a meet and facility record. Samantha Elliott was part of both. The senior ran 8.17 — a personal best — to claim the 60 hurdles title. She later was third place in the 60 dash, before return to action a couple of hours later to be part of the gold medal relay. Olivia James, Nia Fluker and Natoya Goule comprised the rest of the team that ran 3:32.87. Goule added a runner-up honor in the women’s 800. She posted a time of 2:03.57.

Myasia Jacobs posted a silver medal finish in the 60 dash. The Georgia transfer ran 7.38 to lead a pack of four scorers in the event. Sabria Hadley was fourth in the 200 dash with a personal best 23.98.

Grace Barnett took third in the women’s mile. The redshirt freshman earned her first all-conference nod with a time of 4:42.79.

Iana Amsterdam was responsible for the school’s field title Saturday. She posted a mark of 42-2.5 and led a 1-2-4 finish in the event for the Tigers. Land and Anasterasia Terrell were second and fourth, respectively.

The Tiger men finished fifth this weekend, an improvement of six positions over its 11th-place showing a year ago in Elliott’s first season. Virginia Tech, the host school, won the men’s title in Blacksburg.

Tevin Hester brought home ACC Most Valuable Track Athlete honors with his first league title in the 200, and a runner-up finish in the 60. Hester ran personal bests in both, breaking into the top four of Clemson’s all-time performance lists with times of 20.84 and 6.56, respectively.

“We wanted to punctuate it by winning both 4x4s, and we did that,” Elliott said. “We’re still a work in progress on the men’s side, but we got every point out of them that we could. Tevin winning his first ACC championship in the 200 was terrific. He had a great weekend.”

The men closed out the meet in the same fashion as the women, with a victory in the 4x400 relay. Jeffrey Green passed North Carolina’s anchor on the final leg to claim the victory in a time of 3:10.00. He was joined on the gold medal unit by Cordell Lamb, Michael Cheeks and Jorel Bellafonte.

Elijah Britton had a banner day, taking fourth place in the 60 hurdles and 200 dash with personal best times of 7.91 and 21.37, respectively.

In the field, Shai Carpenter posted a fourth-place finish with a personal best in the triple jump. The Greenville, S.C., native hit a mark of 52-2.5, which puts him third in the Tiger record books.
