Tommy Bowden: "Clemson is here to stay" |
Former Clemson coach and current Fox Sports South analyst Tommy Bowden
shared his thoughts on WFNZ Radio’s Primetime about the future of Clemson's football program moving forward after last season's first National Championship since 1981.
"I think it is bright because right now there is such a facilities arms race going on with football," Bowden said. "Clemson has stepped up from a financial standpoint. I don't know if they do - they would be some argument - but they might have the best facilities in college football. And now when you hear other teams talk of prominence they said 'Hey. We got to catch up with Clemson.' Clemson was always catching up especially when I was there. Now they are at the top." Bowden believes that Clemson coach Dabo Swinney is one of the elite coaches in all of college football with his recent wins against Nick Saban and Urban Meyer. "Sometimes you coach with a chip on your shoulder," Bowden said. "Nick Saban and Urban Meyer are the two best coaches in the modern area and Dabo took them both. Dabo beat Urban, shutting him out offensively. Urban has always had great offenses. Then he beat Nick Saban, the defensive genius, with an offensive performance taking a final drive. He's going to be able to walk in a home and gain the same kind of stature and prestige as Urban Meyer or Nick Saban. He is already an excellent recruiter. So they got facilities. They got an administration that understands what it takes because what they did from a facilities standpoint. Dabo has shown from a coaching standpoint he is right up there with the elite plus he has maintained his staff. He has paid them as well as anyone in the country. They have had very little turnover. You take those three things and Clemson is here to stay for a long time as long as he is there and in control."
