was the speaker at the seventh annual Gridiron Kickoff Tailgate Party on Aug. 1 at Landmark Church of Christ in Montgomery, Alabama. Swinney spoke about his life and faith, but also about Auburn and Sammy Watkins.

“It’s the opening game and you find out a lot about where you are,” he said. “You never really know until you play somebody. But you look at Georgia last year and they didn’t open up with a win and people wrote them off right out of the gate and Georgia won the division and played for the (SEC) championship.

“If we win the game, that doesn’t mean we’re just going to go and beat everybody; every game is a battle of its own. You’ll find out more about your team early than maybe if you were playing a lesser opponent, but it’s a long season and one game, whether you win it or lose it doesn’t make a season.”

Swinney said the Clemson coaching staff had not yet decided the fate of suspended wide receiver Sammy Watkins for the opening game, but added that it wouldn’t affect their approach.

“If Sammy plays, he’s obviously a great player, but if he doesn’t play, we really like the guys we’ve got on our team and have all the confidence in the world that they can get the job done.”
