WATCH: Clemson football makes 'life-changing' impact with food bank |
The Clemson football team used its bye week to be a big help to the community.
The Tigers' 'PAW Journey' program partnered with Golden Harvest Food Bank Tuesday afternoon to package food and other goods for families in the Pickens and Oconee County areas. The event was staged at the Clemson indoor practice facility, where Clemson football players and coaches helped in carrying boxes of food for families that stopped by and put together backpacks that will be given to children at area schools. Clemson kicker Greg Huegel led the effort among the players as an ambassador for the 'PAW Journey,' and he talked about what the day meant for the Tigers and community they were impacting:
Golden Harvest Food Bank executive director Travis McNeal said having an entire football team's help was "life-changing."
"We worked for months to work to create this logistical piece for Clemson University, for the hungry and for these students," McNeal said. "Because we know this is a great educational piece and going to change lives. It's certainly going to change each person who walks through that door (to pick up food) and those children that get one of those backpacks on a weekend when many of them don't know where their food is going to come from."
