VT tried to match Clemson's offer to James Johnson |
According to the Daily Press, Virginia Tech athletic director Jim Weaver said Hokies were prepared to raise James Johnson's pay to keep him.
Weaver also said that Tech president Charles Steger agreed to match Clemson’s offer to Johnson. “I went to the president this afternoon and I got permission to pay the same money as Clemson,” Weaver said. “The bottom line is, James Johnson didn’t want to stay. … If he had wanted to stay, he’d be making the very same amount of money he’s getting at Clemson.”
“I talked to James Johnson this morning,” Weaver said during an exclusive interview Friday evening. “He stopped in to see me. He told me in no uncertain terms that (his decision) had nothing to do with money.”
